Starting Okra & Squash From Seed

Any tips?

I planted them in my garden per the instruction on the seed packets.

Plan so far is to keep the ground not dry.

Damp, not soaked.

Still growing, but I think all this rain yellowed the young, first true leaves of the okra a bit.

We'll see what happens.

I took more pics of them, but just now realized.....they suck and it hard to see much in the pics.

I'll try to get better ones in a couple days.

They are really leafing up. No fertilizer, except for TW's secret recipe. It has been cold and extremely wet, so growing conditions haven't been ideal. They are producin buds, though. And as you can see, some have maters on 'em.

I also wanted to show the difference that a couple hours sun can make. I can correct it by cutting down a tree, but some of the plants are shaded for a few hours longer than the ones on the other end. There has got to be close to 8 inches difference in height.

Nice! I wouldn't worry about the okra yellowing. Once the drear goes away that should reverse fast!

Barley, I'm just using hay. I need to put down a little more. I was going light until everything germinated, but haven't been able to get out there since for all the rain.

That is the good thing about all this rain. It was great for keeping the ground moist. I only had to water the day I planted, and haven't done a thing since then.

There shouldn't be any issues with starting them from seeds. Last year we had 8 squash mounds and had enough squash to feed an army. Depending on how much you have plan on freezing, canning or giving away. We give a lot of it away. We didn't use any fertilizer either. Squash for us just seems to spring up like nothing and produce like crazy. Depending on what kind you have though don't let them get too big or they'll get bitter or the seeds will be tough.

One thing we found with the squash is to space them apart more then what a seed packet will tell you too. Ours got really big and we'll spread them apart about 3 feet this year.

For the Okra we're trying that for the first time this year but it looks like you're doing good so far!

They are Pic N Pic hybrid summer squash.

I honestly don't know if they are bush or not.

So, those little baby squash are withering up and falling off.

That IS what happens when they don't get pollinated or are under pollinated, right? Assuming water, weather and good soil are accounted for.

You need teeny tiny whips for the bees. It's a little early, some of my earliest flowers are dropping without having been pollinated. Assuming no other issues, I'd blame the lack there.

****in' aphids have been spoiling all the bees hard work.

I kept seeing squash that I knew had been pollinated suddenly look deflated. Finally got in there for a closer look saw a bunch of aphids of all ages, so I must have overlooked them for some time.

Well, after last look a while ago, the aphids didn't seem to like the Neem II spray. Evil little bugs!
