silly radish question
hey, wadda I know!?
last fall I planted daikon(tillage radish) for an experiment in "bio-drilling aeration". the greens came up and the radish root went down, I was happy. coming into winter it appeared as though the radish had quit growing, so I knocked down the greens and mulched mowed, piled on all the leaves I could get and continued mulch mowing. went through winter.
now it's spring and the radish came back. hmmmph!? I thought, left over seeds? some of the radish that was allowed to grow this spring is starting to put out little white flowers. wife seems to think it's not left over seeds germinating this spring, it's just the radish from last fall completing it's cycle.

Re: silly radish question
Maybe cause you did not pull them up? Or are we talking about a different kind of radish?

Re: silly radish question
supposed to leave the root portion( the daikon radish) in the ground to rot for increased OM and, of course, the hole it made. first time I've done a cover crop like that. darn radish, just got a mind of it's own, hehehehehe.

Gone to seed. Much like me.
Well, at least you get to mow the seeds in and watch those grow. Oh. Wait.

Re: silly radish question
Morph, I got to tell ya, this cover crop stuff is fun. some of the weeds I've allowed to grow this spring are pretty interesting too. have to see how much of the K31 survives the heat. I could throw down a bag of millet seed if it looks like another burn out. for fall I'm thinking about a mix of hairy vetch, winter wheat, more radish.
have to get the gardens locked and loaded by mothers day. potatoes and onions are in. even have some baby hostas from that 200 seeds for $2 deal.
(have a tree line between us and the dreaded neighbor. between the trees are some plants, weeds, hmmm, "naturalizers".
this spring it also contains ivy. when the ivy is swallowing everything in sight, I'll post some pictures.)

Re: silly radish question
I'd love to see photos!
At what point do the cover crops stop and a lawn begin? Or are you just going to cover crop for the heck of it?
I hear ya on the gardens. I shifted a passion flower and a clematis outside to harden off (as they can tolerate this). Next week looks to start the formal hardening, at which point the rack lights turn off for the year...

"cover crops stop and a lawn begin?"
when the cover crops aren't fun, it's over. seriously doubt there's ever going to be what you'd call a lawn here.

Re: silly radish question
With that amount of OM? At some point the soil should be the New York City of worms and micro-arthropods (I believe the worms establish a leash law on the micro-insects at some point).
Barring light level issues, a lawn should grow.
