What questions do I ask myself when deciding..
What questions should I ask myself when deciding which Pre Emergent to use? The only thing I have ever used is Scott's Halts(Pendimethalin), applied once a year every Feb 15th. It pretty much sucked needless to say. I see a lot of talk about Barricade and Dimension so of course I am considering those. But how will I know what is right for me and my situation? Any thoughts on helping me make the best choice are appreciated. Suggestions? Thanks.

Well, the halts wasn't your problem.
It is one of the shorter lived pre emergents and requires application about every 45 days to maintain a barrier.
So duration of protection is one question.
Another question would be what weeds you are seeking protection from.

Wow, okay. It probably did work because I was not noticing crabgrass until probably 2 months later. That's a bit much though, Don't really care to spread halts every 1 and a half months. I'm looking for something that requires fewer applications maybe 2-3 a year would be nice. As far as duration in an ideal world I'd like to be protected from Mid February through September. So that is 7.5 or 8 months I guess.
Main weeds I am after to prevent are Crabgrass for sure. Yellow Nutsedge would be nice, although not sure if any pre emergent will protect from that, lol. Florida Pusley, Spotted Spurge, Chamberbitter, and Common Buttonweed. Goosegrass would be nice, but I don't really have much of a problem with those.

Maybe try Green Light Amaze? It's one of the ones I've seen texas_weed recommend and the one I will probably use next year.

How does that compare with Green Light CRABGRASS PREVENTER2 With DIMENSION?

I've *heard* you should be careful using Amaze around trees and shrubs.
Double check that before taking it as gospel, though.

For some reason Amaze is targeted for warm season grass. Maybe the Pre M is different. I used the crabgrass preventer with dimension last year. I really like it. Does not have any fertilizer in it at all.

Is there much difference in effectiveness of applying it as liquid vs granular? Is 8 months of protection feasible?

You could make multiple applications to extend the protection all year. Spring and fall apps being the norm. Just stay within the total annual limit of the product.
Not sure of the ins and outs of granular vs. liquid.

wait... I though spring is the time for pre-M. I have tons of weeds. Would I be well served doing a pre-m now or in the fall? Is there an article or thread about this you can point to? I didn't look into it at all because I thought March is the time for that!

A search of the forum will turn up a ton of pre emergent timing results.
It all really depends on what you want, I guess. For me, even though my grass is dormant in the winter, I still don't want winter weeds running rampant. Even though summer will kill most of them, they are still competing for resources with my preferred grass.
What type of weeds are you having problems with? What pre emergent did you use this spring?

I'm not real familiar with your weather, but March *may* not be the right time for YOU. Ground temps, not time of year, dictate when weed seeds germinate.
This was a pretty good thread. Lots of little nuggets spread throughout.

Re: What questions do I ask myself when deciding..
Thanks, I'll check out the threat. I'm dealing with tons of weeds and their brothers and cousins, too. I moved in April 1, so nothing was done this year at all. Dealing with tons of crabgrass, pusley, nutsedge, kyllinga, other unidentified grasses (growing tall and thin much higher than the lawn, no idea what it's called), several other broad-leaf types, flowering weeds I can't name. I'm not bothered by anything that's either temporary or simply cosmetic, but I'm freaked out by stuff that can take over the lawn or ruin sections of it, such as crabgrass. Other than that, I'm trying a mostly organic approach. But with teh amount of weeds I have had, I'm not sure pure organic will be sufficent, at least not at first. Are there winter weeds in FL that can take over or ruin the lawn??

Re: What questions do I ask myself when deciding..
The crabgrass, with the proper timing and pre emergent, will be a thing of the past. I have a 1/2 acre and probably only had 3-4 crabgrass spots this year.
Nutsedge and kyllinga are sedges. They are perennials. Pre-emergents won't kill them, but there are several post emergent herbicides on the market that will and are also safe on St. Augustine.

How would you describe your winters? Does your grass ever go dormant?
I can only imagine they are pretty mild.
With winter weeds here, the summer will kill them, but you still have to deal with them up through late April.

Extremely mild winter. I am still not clear whether our grass ever really goes dormant, but it slows down for sure from November to Feb/March. There are a few nights of frost each winter. I read the thread. I have no idea if we even have forsythia here - no one knows what it is!

Re: What questions do I ask myself when deciding..
I had no idea what forsythia was either, nor do I recall ever seeing it in Florida. Bestlawn taught me what it was. I watch soil temps for timing of pre m. Michael is right, in Central Florida pre m should go down earlier than March. It has always been Feb in my experience. As a general rule, University of Florida says Feb 15th for central Florida.
At this point, I think I am leaning toward doing liquid apps of Barricade (prodiamine) using a backpack sprayer. The general consensus seems to favor the liquid getting better results. Barricade is a little more money up front, but it should last many years to come.

How much will you charge me to come over and do my lawn at the same time?

Re: What questions do I ask myself when deciding..
Check your soils temps for the proper time to apply a pre-m. I always put mine out late winter/early spring whenever the temps are bumping mid 50s for a few days. This has me dropping between mid Feb to early March here in central Ga. I check soil temps again in the fall, when they drop below 70, I apply again to keep those winter weeds from germinating.
Can't go by forsythias or daffodils, different types bloom at different times.
