How late do your Bermuda lawns stay green?

Postby ncsuteg » November 11th, 2011, 10:36 am

As a hopeful future Bermuda lawn tender, I am very curious how they look this late in the year. Does the variety of grass (Yukon vs others) make a difference? I have searched the web and am finding little picture wise.

Anyone want to show off their fall Bermuda?

It will stay green until your first real frost. Even Yukon can't fight off a frost.

So, around here, that means green until about November.

When the nighttime temps start to dip into the 50's and 60's, growth slows dramatically. Color might also start to fade, too. I didn't notice a color fade so much this year, but our weather has been all over the place, too. Yukon should want to stay greener in the colder temps compared to other varieties, but it still can't fight off dormancy after a hard frost.

Bermuda will slow down growth as temps drop, and will go dormant after the first light to medium frost.

As for spring green up the variety makes the difference in when it will green up, and how well it will tolerate winter kill.

Of the hybrid varieties the cold weather champions are:

TifSport
Tifway-I (aka 419)

For seeded varities:

Riviera
Yukon

Varieties to avoid in the transition zone

SEEDED TYPES:
NuMex
Arizona Common
Princess
Mohawk
LaPaloma

HYBRID TYPES:
Greg Norman-1

I will post a picture to this thread in the next couple days. Mine is fading in color but not dormant yet. We have not had a frost yet, though. Probably won't see a frost for at least another couple weeks.

That is expected in DFW right now as you have already had a light frost this year. As for the variety in DFW 99% chance it is Tifway-I aka 419. You got nothing to worry about as everything is normal.

My Yukon is dormant now (fully dormant about the 1st of November). Although I mowed it this weekend and there were little patches of green, much to my surprise.
Well I've always had a deep respect and I mean that most sincere.

My common bermuda is still green both in San Antonio and in George West (100 miles south of SA). Of course I still have my AC on in George West, so I'm not expecting the grass to go dormant right away. Fall is definitely here which means the temps fluctuate between the 80s and the high 60s. That's better than fluctuating between the 90s and 100s of summer.

My TiffGrand is still a nice shade of green with little sign of dormancy and I've had 2 hard frosts. I'm very surprised. I've had several nights in the upper 20's to low 30's since the beginning of November.

Wow, that is surprising! All of the bermuda around here is now completely dormant. I'm about 80% dormant on the zoysia (from a distance it looks completely dormant, but when you stand next to it and look down, i've still got some green down in there).

Avonlea, what height is your grass right now?

My neighbor has some spots that get cut pretty low on some peaks of small hills, and those places are holding green while the taller stuff is dormant.

My tifway got its first frost damage about the last week of October. Held steady for a couple weeks, and then this last cold snap has pretty much sent it packin' for the year.

Still some green striped in here or there, but nothing to speak of.

I left it pretty tall (for Bermuda). Without actually going out to measure, I'd say it's about 1.5 to 2". I wanted to leave it a bit long for the insulation factor mentioned in the Bermuda Bible. I'll try to take a pic of it today and post it. It by no means looks like a summer lawn, but it surely is green. :)

My common Bermuda is going dormant pretty fast right now. However, my Tifgrand, which is on the north side of the house is still almost totally green. I mowed it a week ago (about 1.5 to 2 inches). We have had 2 fairly heavy frosts in the last couple of days, but still no sign of dormancy. It looks like I will have to mow again the first week of Dec. I live in the upstate of SC. Nice benefit of longer green with Tifgrand.

Yeah, it kinda looks funny when you drive down the road. Everyone here has St. Augustine and it's either dormant or going dormant (or dead from the drought).

High. Higher than I've allowed it to get all year. My Mascot reel goes to 2 5/8" I believe and it's higher than that. Ive had to bust out the ol' rotary the last three mowings. I'd guess 3" to 3 1/2". I've gone from every other day mowings to maybe every 10 days now. Maybe 14 days. I miss mowing.

Finally had a chance to snap a couple of pictures. The first is the lawn covered in frost:
