Grass ID - Is this Zoysia?

Postby gtnike » September 2nd, 2010, 9:43 pm

Hi everyone, I am a regular here on the cool-season side, but I have a warm season grass growing in my lawn that I would like some help on identifying. Attached are some pictures. This grass grows very thick and spreads, and it has narrow blades. In one of the pictures you can see the runners right next to the asphalt. Is this:

- Bermuda?
- Zoysia?
- Centepede?

I had one spot of this show up last fall, and so far this summer I have seen patches of this pop up in 2 other places. I did attempt to overseed my lawn and convert to bermuda a few years back (failed). I also bought zoysia plugs once but they also croaked pretty quick too. I had pretty much decided to go Fescue exclusively, but am curious what this is and if it is a suitable lawn grass?

I didn't realize that you were asking me. :rotfl:

I would say it's bermuda just by the runners in the last picture. If it is bermuda and you want to keep your fescue, get rid of it. Of course either would make a good lawn in your area..

haha, thanks nothing! sorry, didn't mean to call you out!

Anyway, I got my answer - It is Zoysia (I think).

As I meantioned earlier, several years ago (summer of 2006) I decided I was sick of Fescue. Looks great in in April and May, and then again in October and Novermber, but with our summers it looks horrible in June, July, August, and Septmber. Those are 4 motnhs I would like to use my lawn! At that time I thought Zoysia would be easier and I bought about 20 plugs and spread them out. Then nothing. Fast forward to late 2009 and this shows up out of seeminglyt no-where. NHow all of a sudden I have other patches showing up in places tha tI now remember putting these plugs in.

Honestly I cannot believe these plugs have apparently sat in the ground for 3-4 years doing nothing, then all of a sudden they show up like wildfire. I really like this grass, so I may buy a few more plugs here and there and spread them out while still nurturing my Fescue. I would be inclined to say if I wanted a perfect lawn in Tennessee, this is a perfect grass. It literally feels like walking on carpet when you walk across it!

The first two pictures I will buy as being zoysia. The last one has bermuda in it. My zoysia experience is limited to one variety but my bermuda experience is, well, also limited to one variety. The runners in the last one look very much like common bermuda.

NCSU has an excellent site for turfgrass identification. A good place to start is at Click here for more information and then click on the name of the grass that you want to identify. There are several screens of close-up pictures and lots of other educational pics to help you identify the grass.

I agree with the other posts here. The third (bottom) photo looks like bermuda because of the seed heads. The others may be bermuda, but the broader leaf looks like it may be zoysia. There are other parts of the grass anatomy as shown from the above URL that can help you decide.

Nope, it's Zoysia as I mentioned on your topic. This is the "Zoysia Farms" Variety.

And I'm a Georgia Tech fan, I'm not in the mood to visit an N.C. State website this week :(
