Median soil sample survey Michigan Counties

Postby Jackpine » January 2nd, 2012, 1:05 pm

Sorry if this a boring subject  but with the mini blizzard "raging" outside and being somewhat bored, I stumbled on this crop science report on Michigan soil averages by county.

2 guesses what they grow in Van Buren and the first one doesn't count lol

BTW, I'm in Antrim. My last soil test a few years back (MSU) came in close to the Charlevoix Co. averages which makes sense since it a just to the north of me a few miles. I'm guessing the Antrim samplings favor the hills overlooking the bay to the west (the major fruit growing area) and the eastern end of the county which is a broad plain where potato farming is a biggie.

I'm actually a little surprised - I've seen more pH's in the Michigan tests we see just below or just above 8.0 than that indicates...

Andy is it possible that because the greast majority of these samples are ag related that may account for it? Wayne and Oakland Counties (Detroit, Pontiac corridor) do run 7.4 and 7.5.

My sister-in-law has a place in Washington Township, MI and runs a pH of 7.8, and that seems average for what I get to see from tests. Obviously we get a lot more tests from SE MI than elsewhere because of the population.
