Need ideas for property line shrubs
I have a stretch of about 30' on the north side of my house that I am looking to plant shrubs along as buffer between the neighbors and I. It doesn't get a lot of sun, but does get some late in the day so I am looking for suggestions that will fit these characteristics:
1. Does Well in Shade
2. Grows (or can easily be trimmed without resulting ugliness) to 8-10' tall max
3. Holds up well in all New England seasons (I live in Western MA)
4. Can be planted reasonably close together (looking for a "wall" effect here)
I'm thinking of the arbor vitae type shrubs, or sometimes Ive heard them called Thuja? Some sort of evergreen type shrub, Im obviously open to suggestions.
Thanks!

Re: Need ideas for property line shrubs
Its going to be hard to find something that maxes out at 10 feet. I have Leland cypress trees in my yard. They grow fast and are great looking. Problem is there max height is 40 feet. They are easy to keep around 10 if you cut the leader off the top. That is easily done with a pair are snips. Now Morph has the green giant Thuja. I think they are a mix of arborvitae and something else. They also get tall but again all you do is cut the leader off of them. Most of the plants are going to want full sun but can deal with part shade.

Take a look here at the top four on this page. The cypress trees look nothing like mine.

I am looking for same general characteristics and was recommended skip laurel by a nursery worker. I havn't looked into it much but have seen nice privacy screens in my neighborhood using these.

Thanks for the info Simpson, those Leyland Cypress trees are just the ones I was thinking of, just never knew the name. I'll have to check out my local nursery and make sure they'll do ok with the partial sun, that website you sent says they will. thanks again

That is a current picture and a picture from when I planted them the summer before last.
Now when you buy them get the smaller ones. They establish faster and grow better and they are cheaper. I bought my nursery out so I had different sizes. The three foot ones you see are just as tall as the six foot ones I planted. They are all about 7-9 feet tall now. Buy the end of next summer I might have to start cutting the leaders off so they fill out.
The closer you plant them together the less big they get. Mine are planted 6 feet apart.

Now how deep did you plant them? I only ask because I need to call Dig Safe as these will be going in the same area where my electrical lines to my house are buried.

I would say no more then 12 inches. I dig wider and deeper then the pot it comes in. Then I add compost/peatmoss to the mix and fill it back in with the dirt. I also cross cut the root ball before I set in the hole. Most of the time they are root bound.

+1 Simpson, although I don't tend to go deeper than the pot (depending on the size of the pot).
The rule is to dig a $50 hole for a $2 plant. Go much wider than you think you need to, at least twice the diameter of the pot.
I'll cut roots if necessary, but generally try to untwine them first if possible. It's not always possible...!
