Let's keep an impact diary of the impacts of Irene to members. Post the wind and rainfall totals as the storm approaches and passes you...

I'll start here and edit the post as things change (assuming I have power, which I probably will, and it isn't storming):

Saturday, 1 PM: Light and variable winds, no rain, but rain bands approaching fast. Rain total: 0.00 inches. I just noticed we went under a Tropical Storm Warning at 1 PM.

2:15 PM: It just started raining lightly. Yeah, the humidity is oppressive. No appreciable wind.

3:45 PM. Mildly breezy, the first rain band is through and the patio dried. Total precip 0.09".

8:30 PM: 15 MPH NW winds, moderate rainfall. Total precip 0.26", but I expect that to start rising quickly as the rain is getting heavier.

9:30 PM: Halfway through the outer rain band! 7 MPH winds, 1005 millibars (29.68 in mercury). 0.37" total and raining quite hard right now (I run about an hour behind on rainfall reporting).

11:00 PM: Winds NE at 20, 30 MPH gusts. Pressure 1002 millibars (29.52 in mercury). 0.76" total rain, and currently pouring. Rain bands #1 and #2 seem to have combined, so now we're halfway through the band...

Sunday, 12:30 AM. Winds NE at 26, gusts in the 40's. Pressure 996 millibars (29.41 mercury). 1.02" total rain and still pouring. 1.71" was official at the airport, so they must have gotten a thunderstorm.

11:30 AM: Winds NW at 18, gusts to 35. Pressure 983 mb (29.18 mercury). 4.03" total rain and it's mostly over.

Occasional rain bands here, and water is beginning to collect under bridges, etc. because the soil is 100% saturated going into this. Wind is very light and variable, oppressive humidity.

They've warned the next town down (lower and close to the river) that flooding is near 100% likely. Voluntary evacuations, though, as we don't expect it to be that bad...yet.

JG, it will be interesting to watch the pressure over the next 24 hours. I was following a similar site in NC, and the pressure went from 1010 to 955 over the course of the storm's approach. I doubt the pressure will be that low by the time it gets to LI.

I know the LI Sound "bottles up" to your West somewhat, and they were predicting the surge to be higher there - any evacuations closer to the beach than you?

None so far on the North Shore, the surge is supposed to be about 5 feet and the topography is such that nearly every home up here is at least that high. I'm probably 100' feet above sea level, although I'm only about .25 mile from Bar Beach.

You can click on Weather Almanac, my low pressure was on 2/26/10, must have been one of those winter storms that year. Got down to 973.

There was an interesting update at the 5pm NHC advisory. Due to the way that Irene is emerging back over the water, the NHC is now predicting that there will be "isolated areas of rainfall totals up to 20 INCHES".

Yeah, I just updated. Winds are starting to increase here, but 15 MPH is not exactly damaging. Yet. Gusts to 60 expected overnight and into tomorrow morning.

We're expecting 70-95MPH winds and Milford, CT may get the eye of the storm. If so what a cool sight

Its supposed to pass right over western nassau (the map is going right over my house...).

Only good news is I'm on the north shore, south shore is going to get slammed. Up to .65 inches of rain.

The eye is occluded, but even the NHC is in amazement that the storm is still showing a 950 mb central pressure (extremely low) after being Cat 1 and spending 11 hours over land.

Could it pick up strength as it moves back into the Atlantic? What does it mean that the eye is occluded?

My sister lives in Miami, one of the worst storms they had (I think it was Hugo) was a Cat 1 that hung around for a really long time; her kids couldn't get back to school for something like 3 weeks. Seems like a slow moving Cat 1 could be worse than a fast moving Cat 2 that is in and out fast.

It means the eye is not open to the sky (in other words, it's covered with clouds).

She's sucking in some dry air, so they don't think it will strengthen. But they think she'll roughly keep her current strength for awhile.

Some of it is that she's a bloody huge storm--like a skater throwing her arms out on a twirl, rotation has slowed and wind speed has dropped. The pressure, in this case, is going more to maintain size than intensity.

That has its disadvantages. Every wind category reaches further from the eye than it would in a tighter, smaller storm so it can impact a lot more land area. We're not built for hurricanes (the more fool us), so that can be an issue.
