Where's the "Forsythia Line"?
So that nobody gets surprised without having the pre-emergent ready-to-go, let's track where the Forsythia Blooming Line is as it moves North. Please update this topic as the Forsythia blooms in your area, and remember to identify your location when you make your update!

Forsythia. I've never seen anything like this in San Antonio

Our weeds are going to seed already, so preem would have had to be done in late Jan to early Feb.

Pacific Northwest (Vancouver area) -- our forsythia has been blooming for a couple weeks now at least.

Well, I've been eagerly awaiting the forsythia post, and now I'm afraid I may be too late! I live in the DFW area and have been trying to keep an eye out for forsythia blooming, but hadn't seen any yet. Based on DC Hall and Texasweed's posts I'm thinking I may have missed it already.

Definitely not in Amarillo yet. I hear they got 7 inches of snow yesterday up around Dalhart.

One of my Kids in-Laws live in Woodward OK not far from Dalhart and they say it has been snow covered since Thanksgiving. They say they have never ever seen so much snow and cold in the 50 years they have lived there. Here just north of DFW we had record snow falls and cold this year.rcnaylor wrote:Definitely not in Amarillo yet. I hear they got 7 inches of snow yesterday up around Dalhart.

Re: Where's the "Forsythia Line"?
Ha, funny you should mention that T-W. I was just commiserating to a friend today how my front yard had had snow it in from Thanksgiving to about a week ago with only 3 or 4 days excepted.
The biggest difference was the usual up and down we get where we are 10 degrees one day and 70 the next was not in play. It got cold and stayed cold.
As you might recall an early cold snap got my pecans last fall. Now I have 2 pomegranates that have made it through 2 panhandle winters outside (they are supposedly some Russian variety) so I am hoping we don't get a LATE cold snap this year. I think I'll be OK with them if it just stays cold and then warms up and stays that way. But, knowing the panhandle weather, that is probably too much to ask.

Re: Where's the "Forsythia Line"?
Yeah RC I remember the pecan tree thread, and that you live in Amarillo. Texas has 5 distinct climates with the Panhandle being the coldest. Just two years ago on Memorial Day Weekend I drove from my home to Las Vegas. When I hit I-40 in Amarillo there was snow showers around, by the time I got to Gallup NM it was a full scale blizzard and they closed I-40. I will never forget checking into a Hampton Inn in Gallup wearing shorts and a tee shirt during a white-out blizzard. Who would of thunk it the first day of summer vacation season full white-out blizzard. Next day they reopened I-40, but it snowed most of th eday, and by the time I got to Flagstaff the snow was 3 feet deep.
Vegas was not much better. I was there for 4 days and it never got above 70 degrees the whole time.

Ha. I bet that was quite a sight. We learn to try to keep a wary eye out around here. But, like you say, sometimes you just can't outguess the weather around here.

STL report:
no Forsythias(have to go drive around today for shopping, keep an eye out).

The Forsythia here in Southeastern Pa (5-miles north of the Mason-Dixon line) is starting to bud out.

Lehigh Valley, PA:
The forsythia, lilacs, and tulip trees are beginning to bud here (unheard of, but we're warm). Surface soil temperatures are approaching 75 during the day, with the temperature at 2" just barely touching fifty during the afternoon. They'll go back down next week.
I have weeds sprouting in the garden, so I went already.

Re: Where's the "Forsythia Line"?
Yeah - weird here too (Lower Hudson Valley). Lilacs and Tulip trees are heavily budded, Forsythia not too much. We had 4.5" of rain last Saturday, snow showers on Monday night, 60's all week and 76 degrees today. The last of the snow melted yesterday. Spent the day cutting up the huge limbs that came down during the 3 foot snowstorm a few weeks ago. Two cords of wood.
Took the RX-8 out of hibernation, and spent time breaking numerous laws on a deserted road. Ah, Spring!

Re: Where's the "Forsythia Line"?
The lilacs started to show tips this afternoon, the forsythia are getting ready, and my cousins are panicking (they own an orchard; the peach crop is in grave danger this year). Snow glories are already done, the crocus are finishing up, and the daffodils have begun.
I spent some time watering in the Dimension today; we're due for 0.5" to 0.75" of rain on Monday.

Unless I've been driving to work with my eyes closed it looks like the forsythia exploded overnight in the immediate Philly burbs.
