Latitude, water & weather...
So I have still not registered a temp below freezing (32.4 was my coldest as measured by my Davis weather station). I find it fascinating to see how many days below freezing people have had in George, Missouri, Pennsyvlania, Maryland, Tennessee, etc. Last year I didn't go below until 11/28.
Interior LI and farther east they have dropped below, but I guess this is why Long Island was such a big agricultural economy. I've been told we have one of the longest growing seasons east of the Mississippi.
I guess England and Northern Europe are much farther north than I am and they are kept temperate by the Gulf Stream. Interesting stuff.

Re: Latitude, water & weather...
Ocean influence. Look at the south of France for more on that; gorgeous climate, very much like California wishes it were, and further north than I am. Rarely goes below freezing ever.
We still get air masses that passed over the (colder in winter) continent, they get it straight off the ocean with only a little land between the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Finally broke freezing, temp hit 32.1 for about 1 hour this morning. Tomorrow I do the last perennial clean-out in the cul-de-sac and the last leaf blow of significance.
