The start of my first Reno wish me luck 2011!

Postby JC Paint Workz » July 18th, 2011, 9:41 am

Figured I would start a new thread on my Reno as the other was toward seed Selection.

Well I'll be out of town starting this Friday for 2 weeks. I didnt want to be pressed for time so I killed off my lawn Yesterday (Sunday 07/16/11). I used Pronto Big n Tuff w/41% Glyso and 59%other. I used it at 6tbspn per gal in pump sprayer (for edging and property lines)/and 3oz on the ortho Dial-In hose sprayer(larger sections).

I'm getting ready to place my call for my seed. I'm going 20% Prosperity, 20% Moonlight SLT, 30% Midnight II, 30% Bewitched.

When I return on Aug 8 I plan on spraying yard again to kill anything else that has grown in the time I have been gone and to give double coverage. My plan is to wait a week and Aug 15-20 start cleaning up everything and getting some low spots level (While the roofers fix my siding and roof so their not stepping on my baby seedlings). Then plan on seeding and covering with Peat Moss!! Ill be posting pics on my progress stay tuned.

Feel free to post advice/concerns as this is my first Reno (I'm just doing the front/sides, No backyard this year)

How often are you watering over next two weeks? That's key; you want to get any dormant grasses to wake up so they can really die.

Well I dont have irrigation so while I'm gone probably none. Should I water before I leave Thursday night real good so when I come back hopefully they have woken up? Not sure what I should do since I wont be home.

Will it hurt the affect of the killer to water 3-4 after its been applied?

Watering 3-4 days after spraying with Glyphosate should be fine. Make you you scalp and bag the turf before you leave (after the grass is brown, but before it wilts and lays flat).

Also, I would add your topsoil before you spray with glyphosate again. I'd be willing to bet the topsoil you bring in will have lots of weed seeds that will be happy to germinate alonside your Elite KBG.

You need to mow before you leave. It will make life alot better. If you wait for the lawn to be fully dead it just lays over while you cut it. Making alot of raking for you.

Dang I was planning on mowing/cleaning up when I got back. Well I leave friday whats the earliest I can mow? Wed/Thurs? So I just need to bag it all up and discard? Do I mow on the lowest setting the mower will run to ensure its mowing it all up?

I meant 3-4 days but hours works too. I was thinking I could water really hard Thursday night and Friday day while im working (I work from home) and then it would sit for 2 weeks then I could water when I got back let sit for 2 days and kill again. This sound logic? I know its not how it works water hard and it will last you double but not sure what to do while I'm gone. The dog sitter wouldnt have a clue what to do and she'd prolly leave the water on 24/7 forgetting to shut off. I deff dont need that bill right now lol

The earliest you can mow depends on when the glyphosate starts working. As I said above, mow after the grass turns brown, but before it lays down, as I and Simpson described. I don't know how your grass will react or when that sweet spot will be. If you mow a little too early it's not the end of the world since you will be killing again when you get back.

I can see spots close to sidewalks/driveway that are already turning a little and some thin spots in the middle are turning already. So hopefully it browns it quick and I can mow Thursday sometime. I sprayed it kinda of heavy not sure if that means it will work quicker or not but I overlapped my patterns pretty good hoping to get complete coverage. I actually used more then I probably should have.

Question, when you spray it would after it has had time to dry, after the cut, whatever is left on the (grass thats left after mowing) still have killer on it and continue to work?

If you don't have time to clean up before you leave. I would mow with a side discharge. Trying to get all the clippings in the same spot. Then clean up when you get back from vacation. But the trick is to mow once you see the lawn turning yellow.

My Honda does not have a side discharge so I'll just bag it up. I just wont have time to rake it and everything else before I leave but I can probably get it mowed and bagged before I go

I wish mother nature would dump 1-2" during the middle of my vacation and that would take care of the watering but I don't see rain as hot/drought as its been lately.

I also recommend waiting till later to mow--like a good week or more after roundup. The glyphosate may take a while to translocate, especially with some semi-dormant grass; I would also do your first application of roundup on the heavier side. Since you will be mowing and bagging pretty short, I've never had much problem with the dead stuff--it is a heck of a lot easier to mow short than live grass.

I went pretty heavy yesterday with the killer. to be honest the grass thats there isnt thick at all and grass is strong term. More like the weeds overtake the grass because I did not mess with it after the drought last year cause I was planning this reno and the weeds just took over this year. Ill mow right before I leave and hit it again when I get back but I'm really stuck with doing anything while I'm gone so I guess I'll just take care of the rest when I get back. I dont mind busting my a$$ when I get back I'm just wanting to get seed down before its too late

You will be fine. Once you get back water everyday like you are putting your seed down. A week later roundup any green that is growing. Then put your seed. Make sure to read the seeding dates on the roundup bottle.

I've read the label and I dont see anywhere on it about re-seeding time. Not sure if I'm missing it or if its stated in a different fashion. Its Gordons, Pronto Big N Tuff Grass/weed killer. http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7iLX ... Tuf-SL.pdf

Most are like 3-10 days. When I have time I will look it up. Some say you can seed 24 hr later. I am just not sure about the one you used.

Nevermind, I found it I was looking in the wrong sections

9.3 Parks, Recreational & Residential Areas

Lawn Renovation This product may be used prior to planting an area to ornamentals, flowers, turfgrass (sod or seed),

Apply using suitable broadcast or directed spray equipment. For lawn renovation, thorough
coverage is necessary to kill all weeds and old lawn. For best results, apply when daytime tempera-
tures are at least 60°F. Do not mow for 7 days before or after treatment. 7 days after application, soil
may be tilled, fertilized and seeded.

It sounds like we are going down the same path. I just killed my lawn yesterday 07/17/11 also with the Pronto Big n Tuf glysophate. I"ll keep you in mind as I find anything helpful along the way. This process is new to me also so I cannot give you to much good advice but I wish you good luck in your project. Patience is going to be the key for us.
Maybe you can let me know where you purchase your seed from.
