The wife is on the PTA, hence the sign.
The sign says "I have 4 kids. Time to raise your property tax again", or something like that.

Re: Southerncalpal's mini-reno KBG+PRG
I skipped a week or 2... forgive me.
Here's a recent photo of the strip...

very interested in seeing the "reveal" but I have been spreading the snow to cover the edges as it melts. We're expecting new snow this week, but I don't suppose it'll last long. The few peeks I've gotten shown some real promise, but nothing exceptional.
As a side note, the back (I used to call it my BEST area) has some serious snow mold showing up. The rest of the front doesn't, so far. My initial reaction is that the back, shady spots need a different fertilizer schedule... we'll work on that...
Depending on how the strip does, I'm probably nuking the rest of the front yard in the fall... and replacing avalanche (pale green) with Boutique and Bedazzled. I'll still keep the PR blend at 5-10%; I think that helps in a whole bunch of ways, but wouldn't argue about it much. Its just a preference at this point.

Re: Southerncalpal's mini-reno KBG+PRG
well, this just sucks.
The mini-reno is just FULL of Poa Annua. I was OK with the massive PR death over winter, but GRRR... totally frustrated. The strip is the ONLY spot in the whole yard that wasn't core-aerated last year, and its just stuffed full of lime-greenness, and seed-heads.

I'm not touching it right now.
When we melted and then froze over and over again for a month, I knew the PR was going down, but I figured I had plenty of good KBG established that I could just let it fill in over the Spring/Summer. I'm not all that interested in purchasing Tenacity to "see" how it works, when I could have a brand new lawn in 6 weeks.
I dunno what I'm gonna do honestly. The front 2011 reno is definitely on hold for now though. I'm not chasing POA all over the place on a rental property, thats for sure.

Re: Southerncalpal's mini-reno KBG+PRG
I forgot you were in a rental. No, Tenacity doesn't make sense there.
P. annua is a side-effect (at least until this year) of renovation and I got a ton of it myself I got to chase down. During that era, which now seems like the Stone Age (all of 2007!) compared to the stuff on the market today, I took it out in patches with Round Up and encouraged the KBG to spread back in.
It worked. It wasn't pretty for a bit, but it worked.

Re: Southerncalpal's mini-reno KBG+PRG
Been a while BL ppl, but stopped in to post a Sophomore pic. I've been out of town for the past 6 weeks, so watering and bi-weekly lawn care stopped. The Mrs. managed to mow 4 times, but thats about it. I expected to see a lot of dormant grass, especially on the mini-reno strip since we've had basically zero rain in the last month, but the strip managed to stay alive.

I have other spots all over the yard where the unimproved grass has turned brown, much like most of my neighborhood. I'm REALLY impressed with the seed mix/blend that I put in on the strip. Improved grass really is improved. The color is also fantastic, since I haven't applied milorganite since June, and haven't sprayed any iron this year at all.
Sadly, this is probably the last time I'll see this particular strip, as we're moving the beginning of the year, and I'll be back in So.Cal next season.
Thanks for all the education, BL. I came into the neighborhood knowing nothing, and am leaving the neighborhood regarded as the "crazy grass dude on the corner". It was a good run. Can't wait to freak out some Bemuda lovers with a Winter Rye Overseed wherever we end up.
