Rye's 2011 KBG reno

Discuss how to and whether you should renovate your lawn

Re: Rye's 2011 KBG reno

Postby xxryu139xx » September 29th, 2011, 2:23 pm

yep its really spreading now, its still not as dense when ur standing right over it, but i have a feeling after i drop the next batch of starter and MO things are gonna get cranking again. the problem area has alot of germinated stuff from reseeding 1.5 weeks ago.

i think i will end up using the pots in the back yard and in the little alley between my house and the neighbors. it looks real good from afar there but it looks real bad when u get close.

Ur actually very lucky that it was lagging a bit. Much better than watching a lawn die after 42 days.

Looooookin good man!!! keep up the good work. I could only hope that my problem is my seedlings are lagging. It would be nice to see a growth spurt here in the next week. Some darn reason seems like everything is at a stand still, still. This is really getting annoying.
Thanks in Advance,

Looking good Rye. With the colder weather, it seems now I'm seeing some lateral spread but the top growth on some new seedlings spread two weeks ago have been kinda stopped

Day 56 Update /w pics

Postby xxryu139xx » October 5th, 2011, 1:08 pm

Day 56 Update:

Nothing else going on. Still filling up and slowly spreading. It's starting to look more "carpetty" than raggedy. Not as spectacular as some of the other renos out there, but its going slow and steady. No major problems except thin areas where it is real shady.

I am approaching the Day 60 mark. Andy said Emblem's aggressiveness will start to shine soon. I hope he is right!

I still have some white spots from the last tenacity spot sprays. There really is a big difference depending on the initial approach with tenacity. On my areas that were blanket sprayed, succeeding applications, blanket or spot, had no bleaching effect on the kbg. On my front lawn that i spot sprayed only, every time i spot spray now, all the surrounding grass bleach out.

I would recommend people to blanket spray regardless of any fear of the initial bleaching. Successive applications will result in little to no bleaching. I think there was a study that said this also.

I think i'm gonna start picking up my fertilizing to every week instead of every two weeks. I've only been doing about .6 lbs N / 1000 sq. ft. every month + MO @ 2x/bag rate. I'll stop using the Scott's starter and go with the Vigoro that i was gonna use for winterizer @ 1/3 rd bag rate which is about .33 lbs N/1000 sq.ft weekly for a total of 1.33 lbs N / 1000 sq.ft for october.

Is it safe for me to go .5 lbs N/1000 weekly? The vigoro only has less than 5% slow release.

Getting dark and spreading nicely. We usually don't get frost till about thanksgiving, so I think it'll spread and mature even more. Huge improvement from all those weeds earlier in the Reno. Looks great

thanks guys. there are still some weeds in there, just a few. i'm holding off with anymore tenacity treatments until next year, i'm just gonna let the frost kill it and i want the color to mature more so i can see the poas. bedazzled makes it alot harder to diagnose any grassy weeds since they get discolored too.

Comparing these shots to the ones 2 weeks ago, incredible difference. Color is deepening big time and the grass is really starting to fill in. A couple more weeks, that color will be standing out even more.

Nice job Rye :good:

Oh, I'm beginning to get cool with all this. The lawns are starting to look like lawns and we don't have to search for one more way to say "keep going - it looks great" when it looks like a fragile weakling anymore. Cool!!! It's really coming along.

Thanks everyone! I think the last week or so i started to feel confident that my lawn actually looks real good. My neighbors already tell me that they are shocked how awesome it looks. This lawn has never looked as good in the last 30 years. I tell 'em wait til next year when it comes roaring and i start mowing it taller and its gonna look like a shaggy carpet to roll on.

Day 70 Update w/ Pics

Postby xxryu139xx » October 20th, 2011, 1:12 pm

Day 70 Update:

10th week birthday for my lawn. I have been doing weekly apps of Vigoro Ultra @ .5 N / 1000 trying to get it to spread as much as possible. I don't think I'm gonna risk it going to 1 lb N / 1000 weekly yet.

Leaves are falling like crazy. My two dogwoods are almost completely bald now - yeay more sunlight through!

I was finally able to bring out the string trimmer today. Never really used one and got a crash course super fast. No major edging since the grass hasn't completely reached the edges of the lawn yet.

There are some weeds I see hiding among my grass. I'm fighting the urge to hit them with tenacity and let the frost kill it. I see lighter grass too, but i'm not sure if its from tenacity, but my last app was maybe 3 weeks ago now. Do you think it might be poa?

That's thickening up nicely rye. Color and growth looks great too. If your worried about the lighter grass, maybe spot spray tenacity will help distinguish them. This weather lately has been perfect for lawns. Even the irrigation is taken care of.

Have you ever considered just landscaping that Hell strip?

The grass is beautiful now but, it looks like it would be a pain to keep properly watered during summer months.

yeah i've considered it. we just moved here and the neighbor to the right said that usually that little peninsula hellstrip ends up as a dumping ground for snow during the winter. so i thought if i landscape it the snow will either destroy it or be more difficult to throw to the lawn area. i'm still learning alot about gardening/landscaping and we have already killed off a few perennials from lack of a green thumb. =p

Day 91 Update /w Pics

Day 91 Update /w Pics

It's been 3 weeks since i've updated. i can't believe the lawn is already 13 weeks old. the past snow storm threw my lawn schedule out of whack for a little. I'm still doing .5 lbs N/1000 sq.ft. weekly trying to close gaps as much as possible. I've seeing some rust develop for the last two weeks and i've sprayed it with Baking Soda hoping to stifle its spread. U can see it more apparent in the backyard where it gets less sunlight and stays moist throughout the day. Last drop of MO was last Nov. 1, and today is probably the last weekly feeding i do before my winterizer app.

U can see the color is still getting darker and darker. its already a tint darker than my neighbor across the street and everyone else's on the block doesn't even compare. I have found some poa hiding in my reno and i hit them 2x already during the last two weeks with Tenacity at least to limit its spread across the bare areas. U can see the yellowing/liming where i've hit them. I know i'm defenseless right now with no pre-em. I'm really excited for next year when i can slap a pre-em down and the real weed battle begins.

Day 237 Update /w Pics

Postby xxryu139xx » April 4th, 2012, 2:01 pm

It's day 237 for my reno. I can't believe that it has been almost 8 months since i started this project. I have the darkest lawn on the block and I have by far beat my neighbor who prides himself of his lawn (his lawn is still partly yellow). My lawn lost some color during the mild winter, but it was still the greenest compared to my neighbors. I don't think it ever really went dormant. The grass is growing now warranting me to do my first real mow of the season at 3". There are still holes, but I know in the coming months they would fill in.

Amendments so far:
3/14 - Prodiamine @ 4 month rate
3/14 - Tenacity #1 @ 2oz/acre
3/23 - Tenacity #2 @ 2oz/acre
3/23 - Serenade @ 2oz/1000
3/23 - Moss Out @ 4#/1000
3/28 - Boron @ 2 tbsp/1000
3/28 - Milorganite @ 60 lbs/1000
3/30 - Potassium Sulfate @ 2#/1000
4/2 - Big Red Rabbit Food @ 32#/1000
4/3 - Tenacity #3 @ 2oz/acre

I know this year and probably the next will be tough battle with weeds. I have a decent amount of Poa A seeding, so i started tenacity early and hopefully I got the pre-em done correctly and on-time. I mulched mow today and i intend to do that this season.

The backyard doesn't look too good. The kbg under the shade is really thin and sparse, i might overseed that area in the fall with fine fescue as it gets little to no sun. There is also a considerable amount of poa a that is dying a slow death from tenacity.

I plan to push organics this season, and depending on the remaining holes, i might push heavy synthetics feedings in the fall ala Jglongisland.

I thank everyone, esp. Morpheus and Andy, for all the help I have received!

Looking good Rye. Color is sweet.

Here's my question and someone correct me if 'm wrong. Should you be mulch mowing if you have Poa seeds?? It has kept me from mulching thus far this spring. Once they are gone, I will begin. I would think mulching the seedheads would just increase the Poa pressure....Again, correct me if 'm wrong and I will start mulching tomorrow when I plan to cut again.
