New Reno Rust. Cultural or do I need fungicide?

Postby gruckiii » October 21st, 2011, 4:49 pm

I have rust on my brand new reno. Will cultural practices be enough for the baby grass to survive?

Fertilize, Bag grass, clean mower.. what else? :banghead:

How bad? A little rust is normal and can be ignored. Widespread rust issues can kill grasses and will require control.

On a new reno heading into winter, I would treat it. On an established lawn, I would up the fertilizer and call it a day.

All the lighter spots in this image. I circled most of them.

It kind of looks like I may have more than one disease? Most of the orange / yellow areas have a few orange spores that rub off. However I do see some dark lesions that look like leaf spot to me.

+1. That's not characteristic of a light rust infection...

What should he hit it with? I think I might have the same thing.

For rust, and on a new reno, I'd maintain feeding where it is (which is high anyway). Plus add any good off the shelf fungicide that kills rust.

The baking soda trick might work in this case, but if not you don't have a great deal of time left in the season to find out.

I read in another thread that baking soda kills northern grasses. But that was in a thread for trating crabgrass in souther grasses and involved shaking undiluted baking soda from a sock. I assume your "baking soda trick" is some sort of diluted solution?

Yep, 1 tsp per gallon water with about 1 tbsp to 1 oz of any good shampoo to make it stick. It won't kill northern grasses, but does kill fungi--just not completely reliably.

Here is an update.
I used a fungicide, Myclobutanil, and fertilized. The grass took off growing again and it looks like it will probably be fine. I wish I didn't have to kill all my fungi, but its better than letting all my grass die.

I noticed in my renovation a small spot of what appears to be rust. It doesn't look as major as the above picture, but it is there. Since we are about to hit winter dormancy, how serious is this if it goes into winter like that?

A small spot? Probably nothing; new renos do get rust. But how small are we talking?

At the very least, keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't go into rapid spread.

I did a thorough search and in one area it looks pretty bad to me! HELP! Should I do the baking soda method? This is going really late into the season to be applying something now. Growth has really slowed.

Yep, looks just like the problem I am having. My lawn is now a yellow and green. I'm also trying to figure out what it is. I have rust, but the yellowing blades with spots is definitely something else. It's too late for me to do anything this year, but next year I'm planning on cracked corn in April and August, and perhaps Serenade. I'm also looking into disease-resistant cultivars for a future reno. My current lawn is 17 year old KBG, so it's probably susceptible to diseases like this.

same thing i have. i sprayed with the baking soda cocktail and so far it hasnt spread rapidly like they say about fungal diseases. im just hoping it will fizzle out soon, but with shorter days and shorter growing periods, i think it may end up going into dormancy looking like this. its not quite obvious though if u look at it from far away but its there.

I've read that milk could be a good cultural control for rust. Should i spray that and has anyone ever experimented with it?

I sprayed milk this fall and am having issues. That being said I have no idea if things would have been worse if I hadn't done anything.
