Gregg's 2011 North Jersey Renovation
Re: Gregg's 2011 North Jersey Renovation
i was planning to do the pre-em earlier. i see a ton of seed heads and i know i have a ton of pressure coming next spring. the seed heads are so low that the mower can't even get em. i can't pluck them all either since they are so hard to see, but i try to get as many as i can.
so pre-em first
when grass green, plug, respray pre-em around em. keep a solid pre-em barrier for the next year or two.

Re: Gregg's 2011 North Jersey Renovation
Haven't updated my reno thread since last year. So here goes. This is what the lawn looked like all winter

This is where I am right now. Just gave the 3rd mow of the year. Threw compost on the lawn in early March during the heatwave. Applied Dimension in early March as well.

As you can see in the last pic, there's a lot of bare spots from Poa A I killed. I can say with great confidence that Tenacity did not kill any of the Poa A last year. I gave 2 blanket sprays and several spot sprays last fall (all using the spot spray rate) and although they seemed harmed last fall, they all came back with a vengeance this spring. It was a warm winter, so I did notice Poa A throughout the winter as well. I also spot sprayed Tenacity to the Poa spots early March this year, with no avail. This time, they didn't even bleach. I spot sprayed the Poa A twice so far this year, and the Poa A were unharmed. I'm positive its Poa annua, as they started producing seed heads in the past few weeks. Also, they've capitalized on growing in the East facing areas that were quite thin following all the rain last fall. After being disappointed in Tenacity for Poa control in March, I started using Ortho nutsedge killer in early April, which, according to the label, kills Poa A. It seems to have worked, as the areas I spot sprayed with it are pretty much dead right now. I just blanket sprayed tenacity today to help control the chickweed I have growing all over.
Do you guys think I can apply synthetic fert in early May? I think my lawn has greened up as much as it can without a N boost, also I'm planning to drop MO next weekend.

Im sure the tenacity killed the poa last fall. Im also sure that new plants germinated over winter. That's why its a good idea to keep a pre m barrier down all season long.

yeh i would say most of the poa died this winter and replaced by new ones. the sedges and the barnyard grass were hardier.
i am applying milorganite at 60lbs/1000sq.ft. bi-weekly which is almost a 1 lb N fast release. i know i know i'm gonna cut it down end of mayish. =)

Are you using a surfactant with your Tenacity? I would wait another week or so for a synthetic, 1 lb/thousand. I think you would have had a lot more poa without Tenacity and it was a crazy winter.
