Give that a few seasons of week kills and development and it's going to be one amazing lawn...

"Weed" kills. I've killed some weeks, but that's generally an enjoyable experience...

Re: DJG9282's 2011 Lawn Renovation.
Thanks everyone. It has been a battle, but I plan to win the war. Beside the 3 straight weeks of Tenacity, I fed the lawn Oceangro (Milorganite) 3X at bag rate since September and I'm going to throw one more down at half-bag rate. I also fed the lawn with Vigoro Super Green two weeks apart at half-bag rate. I got another bag to put it to sleep come November.
Do you think Dormant seeding on that one sidewalk strip would be worthwhile or just transplant from a good area in April? I plan to transplant on the slopes (You don't see the slopes in the pic), but the slopes had a very hard time with seeding as they are on a 60-70 degree angle.

Re: DJG9282's 2011 Lawn Renovation.
With that weed pressure I would skip the dormant seeding. I don't even see a need for a plug. You got terrific spread in fall of the first year, next May all of those areas will fill in like wildfire. I would get an ironclad pre-M barrier down in late March and make sure I didn't disturb the soil at all.
That is one awesome turnaround. Tenacity is unbelievable; in past years you would have gone into the winter with all those weeds, started using WBG in April and then hope it would like in late May like it does now.

Wow...That really filled in nicely once the weeds got nuked. Color looks great. What a difference a couple weeks make, huh. I used to work up in Piscataway a few years back. 287 is the pits!!

Re: DJG9282's 2011 Lawn Renovation.
We are at 13 Weeks since seeding and at 93 days exactly. I did a final cut today and plan to winterize on Sunday afternoon. I also got some pictures from this same time last year for you to look at and so you can see the transformation yourself. Overall, I'm very happy. I'll attack the weeds big time in the Spring and hopefully some holes will fill in as you can see on the pics.
Let me give you the rundown:
August 20th: Tenacity applied to weedy areas including the sidewalk strips.
August 23rd/24th: Seeding Day @ 2 lbs. per K
September 9th: Oceangro Fertilizer @ 1 lb N per K
September 20th: Tenacity applied
September 25th: First mow at 2 7/8 inches
September 30th: Oceangro Fertilizer @ 1 lb N per K
September 30th: Vigoro Super Green @ 1/2 lb. per K
September 30th: Second mow at 2 7/8 inches
October 3rd: Third mow at 2 1/8 inches
October 7th: Tenacity applied
October 8th: Fourth Mow at 2 1/8 inches
October 15th: Fifth Mow [ditto]
October 22nd: Sixth Mow [ditto]
October 22nd: Oceangro Fertilizer at 1 lb per K
October 22nd: Vigoro Super Green at 1/2 lb. per K
October 30th: First Frost
Nothing was done in November except for one more organic fertilizer at half rate and of course the weekly mowing.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice. I look forward to seeing holes fill up, weeds totally destroyed, a darker greener lawn, and my neighbors being put to shame haha

Whoa, you really did a great job. Looks awesome considering the weed pressure you had! Can't believe how infested your lawn was looking at the current pics.

Re: DJG9282's 2011 Lawn Renovation.
So, I was paid a visit from my local neighbor (landscaper). This is the same one that offered me advice when i was killing the lawn and saying that my ideas would not work especially the one not to disturb the soil. Then during the strong weed invasion in my renovation, he suggested that I use roundup 7 days prior to seeding (which i did); and today he says, "Can I tell you what i would do?" sssssssuuuuuureee why not!
He says that its a mistake for me to cut it so short right now. I told him i was doing it for density, tillering, and to cut back on diseases. He responded, "ok yeah that would be fine for this time but come..." I stopped him and said, "I won't keep it this short for the summer, i will shade the soil more come summer." He responds, "Yeah because i was going to say..."
Then he starts telling me that what I went through was nothing and that the hardest part of maintenance is yet to come. After all i dealt with this fall, I'm not worried. To me, i think come spring and summer will be the easy part.
Do they just like to hear themselves talk? He obviously thinks I don't know squat. But makes me wonder what he thought when he saw weeds turning white? Did he think that was a disease? A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G!!!
Ok, my frustration is gone. Carry on.

lol, wait til u tell him ur "maintenance" regimen in the summer. i'm sure he will cry when u tell him u intend to drop massive amounts of organic vs his 4 step program.

About a week off from showing comparison pictures from last year to this year, but I had a run in with a rabbit this morning. Looks like he wants to ruin my pictures next week with a big hole! So annoyed. Thing is? He didn't get very far as he stopped about 4 inches in. Roots look good though! About to cover the hole back up in an hour or so. It's going to kill me to see the bluegrass all dug up!

I took the flash off and the picture got blurry. I didn't take this last night.

That looks quite large for a rabbit to have done. Put 2-3 plugs in the middle and it will close a lot faster.

After i put the dirt back in the hole, it doesn't look too bad from a distance. The hole really isn't as big as the camera is making it look. The throwing of the dirt everywhere really makes it look worse than it is. It should fill in nicely.
I see those holes in the back and I saw a rabbit in one of them so I'm assuming it was a rabbit. Don't know what other animal would dig that much, get bored, and move along without going to another area in the lawn. Maybe someone can throw out ideas.

Raccoon(s). I would check around for grubs.

It's confirmed now. Definitely a rabbit. It redug the hole in "Rabbit" fashion. So annoyed! But what can I really do? Assuming the rabbits go after the babies grow up, should I dig up around the area and lay down some plugs?
Is there anything else that might deter them...moth balls, etc.? The thing had to pick smack dab in the front!

Just thinking out loud here. Would a motion detecting sprinkler chase them off?
