NJ Dave's 2011 Renovation

Discuss how to and whether you should renovate your lawn

OK...Good to hear. Thanks
Plus there is probably some residual from the weekly 1/4lb apps that I did the couple weeks prior.

The heck with them. Their just jealous that they don't have your lawn.
That new lawn of yours is going to go through some serious iron withdrawal in January. :)

I'll finally get to see what effects my 10oz of Bonide had tomorrow since all I've seen since I applied it is frost in the morning or darkness when I get home.

Hard to see what's happening (good or bad)

Didn't get the DARK DARK color I had hoped. Has great color and is dark, but not tremendously.
Thanks to you, I have the urge to buy another bottle of Bonide since I'm out.

One more spray is not going to hurt anything. I prefer straight iron but I did not want to order any so late in the season. I sprayed 32oz over 1400sqft over the past two weeks. Not that you should do that but I did.

You can order it now (I did) if you store it in plastic containers. I got a cheap set from my local grocery store for a few dollars, about eight by five by five, that can store about three pounds. Ten stores the largest order.

It'll keep fine in those over the winter, and I won't have to scramble to find iron for my first April app next year.

Found 2 open bottles in my shed w/ a total of 16oz....Did 12oz (7.5/k) in the front and 4oz (4/k) in the back. Also did another cut that took off 1/4" in the front. The back had zero growth. Hopefully this is it with the cutting with winter air coming at the end of the week.

Next year I will have fun with the ferrous and ammonium sulfates.

I think the winter pattern will finally change for the season this coming week. But until then:

I noticed that the lawn needs to be cut yet again after 2 weeks. Some areas grew a good 1/2 to 3/4 inch in the front. I will cut tomorrow and will also drop another .75lb/N since this has been such an abnormally warm period. This weather has been great for root growth though!!

Here is one Tenacity observation....Did a spot treatment 2 weeks ago on the 5 small spots that I have (pretty heavy drop). Between that and the couple nights of hard freezes into the low 20's, it has nuked the cr@p out of it. They are finally brown and beautiful. Results really started to show 10 days after the app, but today the POA can RIP.

The rest of the grass looks great, plus I added another liquid spray bomb on Thursday after the 65 degree weather. In any event, this should conclude the 2011 renovation. May post a Christmas picture or something :)

I wish all of you a happy and safe holiday season and New Year.

Cheers

Pics from yesterday following a fresh cut. Nice and green with some poa kill sprinkled in.
Dropped some urea (.7lbsN/k) since the lawn grew about an unexpected inch in a couple weeks.

Well, that is a wrap for 2011.
Happy Holidays!!

Thanks. Neighbor is a good guy. Doesn't care about his lawn, but we do help each other out with other things. He does ask if I ever had a calling to be a groundskeeper at Yankee Stadium. I only wish.

Thanks.... It's still green in mid-February, although it has lightened considerably and looks nothing like these pictures. The winter here in the East this year has been very cooperative with no deep freezes or snowstorms. Very strange but good for the developing lawn.

Here are a couple pics that I took this evening. Amazing how much greener the lawn is since Saturday, when I made the cleanup mow...A week of 70 degrees plus will do that. Now all we need is rain, which should finally come this weekend. It has been pretty dry here.

Tenacity has been huge. With the unbelievably warm winter, the GD Poa had a nice jumpstart. So far, I have dropped three Tenacity apps since March 1st totaling 8oz/A...I will keep the remaining 8oz/A for the Fall, except for any spot treatments that may be needed.

Besides that, I have dropped 40lb/k of Oceangro (NJ's version of Milorganite), 1/2 rate (4 month) application of Prodiamine (Barricade), 20lb/k of corn meal and 5oz/k of Agri-fos Phosphite, along with the soil amendments that were provided by Andy & Morph.

Lookin great Dave. I applied compost and dimension last week, but this very warm weather has really gotten the survivors from last fall a big head start. I've got chickweed, sedge and poa a growing like mad. I'm pretty sure most of these weeds made it thru the winter unscathed as it was a warm winter to begin with. I'm hoping the dimension can prevent it from getting worse and I spot sprayed tenacity yesterday. Im sending a soil sample to Logan this week that I dug up before doing anything to the lawn. I don't know how well tenacity really did on the poa a last fall. They seemed to have come back after 2 blanket sprays and at least two spot sprays throughout last fall. Then again, this past winter really favored Poa A cause of the temp, so they may be new plants germinated over winter. The poa really capitalized on less dense areas of my lawn and I may have to RU a corner and reseed this fall.

An update for anyone who cares...I finally applied my first Ferrous ammonium sulfate application yesterday. Results started showing in a couple hours, plus we had a constant mist all afternoon yesterday, which was great keeping the blades wet without any runoff. I have been cutting at about 2.25", which I will try to maintain as long as I can. Last year I cut too high, which led to very bad fungus. To date, I'm at about 110lbs/k of organic (includes 20lbs of corn meal). I have had no bleaching of the KBG with the multiple tenacity apps. The Poa-A has been wilting away. I have one spot on my smaller hellstrip that needs heavier spot sprays, but it has yellowed significantly.

Here are some pics from earlier today. They look darker in person, but I'm not complaining. It is by far the greenest lawn around. Every other lawn that I have driven past has tons of light green grass. It drives me crazy, plus not the safest thing to do behind the wheel of the car

I also put down 28 bags of mulch in the beds, which were very much needed.

Thanks....Summers are harsh. You and I need to do everything that we can to avoid another fungal relapse and disaster. If we can, our lawns will only get better.
