Amadore's Lawn Renovation - With Pics!

Postby Amadore » September 21st, 2011, 10:27 pm

The renovation has begun!

Wow, you guys weren't joking - this was a ton of work! Everything is planted, and as of this writing I am two days in. I made some handy sprinklers (found a tutorial somewhere on this forum) and sunk them into the ground. They work awesome, and distribute the water evenly. I am watering two times a day and the ground is damp at all times. Do i need to water three times a day? I keep thinking if I look hard enough I will force the grass to grow, haha.

My big concern is that I am already seeing little tiny weeds growing. Will this stop my grass from growing? Are they going to take over my new lawn? The second picture below shows the weeds, there are tons of them. :(

I will post update pics as soon as I hit germination.

9/5 - Roundup whole lawn
9/12 - Roundup whole lawn again
9/19 - Scraped lawn, then shaved lawn to bare dirt
9/20 - Put down starter fertilizer, seeds, then top dressed with peat

Day 1

Day 2 - How do weeds grown in 2 days?!?

I didn't use tenacity, do you think I should buy some and lay it down tomorrow? If I don't will my renovation go to waste?

Here is a pic of the grass that I planted. The local bank uses this grass, and it looks amazing. Let's just hope it looks as good in my yard, haha.

looks like all ur seeds are Tall Fescue, so your germination should soon. Your establishment period should be really quick too possibly outcompeting those weeds. those weeds may have come with your bag too. most of those weeds will die at first frost anyway.

I wouldn't worry about occasional weed as lawn will be establishing itself it will choke off most of them.

Day 7 germination! I saw a few random sprouts on day 5, but not many. Day 6 was decent, day 7 and I am getting a slight green shade on the entire lawn when the light hits it just right. The neighbors think I am nuts, I look at it 7 or 8 times a day, haha.

And this is one of the sprinklers that I made from the tutorial on the forum. I sunk 3 of them into the front yard and they work awesome. 100% coverage, they shoot about 35 feet. They are positioned in a triangle pattern, one at the front curb in the middle spraying 180 degrees, and one in each back corner spraying 90 degrees. The middle gets an overlap, but the slight slope helps a bit with it.

Amadore:

Great! Celebrate by taking down the "Grass Type = Weeds" in your profile, and putting in your new grass type...

Thanks Andy!

I have never seen wheel marks so deep, is it because the grass is so new that it does that? It even left foot prints when I walked on it.

Yup, new tall fescue pushes down very easily, next year it will be much more resistant.

How did you do this part? What did you "scrape" and "shave" with?

I hate you fescue guys. Such beautiful lawns in 30 days or less. Congratulations that's going to be one sexy lawn next spring.
