Interesting Autumn

Interesting Autumn

Postby andy10917 » October 30th, 2010, 10:27 am

This has been a very interesting Fall. While it has cooled slowly and evenly, it has just missed a frost several times and we're now 10 days late on the typical first frost for the Hudson Valley.

One of the things that I noticed is that the assumptions that we make about plants dying due to frost are wrong. My hundreds of Hosta all suddenly went yellow and collapsed to the ground within a two-day period without any frost. But some tender annuals are doing fine.

Ditto here. Normal first frost is October 10th and we keep missing it--last night's projected frost was 37 degrees instead. A lot of the perennials are responding to lower light levels and cooler temps by going dormant, but even the cannas are still going strong.

Too bad that. I can't lift them until they freeze out, although I'm considering rushing it.

Same here - last night was 34 degrees and the Cannas and Caladiums look like July. Hostas are totally flat.

Executive decision--the cannas start coming out today (given the size of the tubers, 2-3 feet across, it takes me a while to excise all the roots!) I'll just dry 'em on the patio for a day or so before bagging them for winter.

Let's face it, cannas on November first? Please. :-)

On the up side, the rose bushes are still going strong.

My wife tore out all the annuals so she wouldn't have to do them when it was cold out. Most of them still looked fine.

We've usually had at least one good snowstorm by now, but this year, not only has it not snowed, but most of teh leaves are still on the trees.
