Garden Photos

Postby bernstem » May 14th, 2011, 8:13 am

I gardening and have a very amateur interest in photography. Made me think we should have a thread with garden photos. I didn't really see anything, so figured I would start one.

I don't have anything like a finished garden since I just moved in a year ago and am still getting a feel for the yard, soil, sunlight, etc. Plus, I don't have the budget to do what I really want yet. Even so, I have a few roses and inherited plants and since my roses are starting to look good in their second year here are a few pictures. They are all close ups since I don't have anything that is worth a wide shot. This is the first bloom on the Love and Peace and off a smallish stem, so I expect some better blooms. Maybe when I get a few more blooms on the roses, I'll put up some wider photos also.

Double knockout.

I know some of you have stunning gardens, so lets see some images.

That's a stunner of a peony. My grandmother loved them, and my grandfather transplanted some from her childhood home for her.

I love the rose, too!

At the moment, mine are kind of...tiny, really...as I just finished planting yesterday. Now it's raining.

I'll try to remember to take some pix today, my tree peonies exploded this year, the flowers are the size of dahlias. I'm attributed it to the raw milk about 6 weeks ago (can't think of anything else).

Looking good. I like the pink/purple peony with the yellow center, and the Dianthus looks nice and happy.

If I have time I'll do it (the clean up is a mess), the re-bloom is pretty poor, not as good as the may night salvia.

Aint that the truth!

We got into the 80's for a couple of days. All the tulips and daffodils dropped their blooms, which stayed in bloom for the longest time ever.

It's 43 degrees all this weekend again, so now that March is back for round #2, we'll see what the tulips and daffodils do this second early spring, LOL!

Heh, we hit 90 the other day, but we are back down to the 50s. Around 70 is average for this time of year. I expect the rest of my roses to flush out the next week (not that I have that many yet). I have also been mowing twice a week for almost a month...

The love and peace has really hit its stride the past week. The double pink knockout is starting to fade a bit. Those blooms turn almost white at the base.

Image

As the blooms age, they get more red.

Image

And of course the obligate rose with dew on it (even though it is really rain).

Image

Here is a wider view of the rather small rose garden. Above it you can see the vegetable garden (with a few irises in it for color). Eventually, the space between the knockouts and the vegetables will be red old english roses.

Looking great. What do you use to keep black spot and powdery mildew away?

Chemicals... :duel:

I am using Bayer Advanced Disease Control (Tebuconazole) this year Click here for more information. I find it best to alternate anti-fungals and I am planning to alternate with Daconil (Chlorothallonil) this year. I have used Ortho Rose Pride(Triforine) in the past, but my impression is that it may be more toxic to bees, etc. I have not, however, researched the topic extensively. The local rosarians seem to lean towards Tebuconazole and Chlorothalonil so that is where I lean. I usually spray once per month, but will spray more often if I see some breakthrough and feel that added control is needed.

I wish I could reliably keep fungus at bay here and still go 100% organic, but I'm not willing to try at this point. I have too many young roses that won't tolerate a fungal outbreak well. I also like to grow Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, etc. and those are not bred for disease resistance. Perhaps in a year or two I may try fully organic and see how it goes, but, at the moment, the only garden I have that I like are the roses and I don't want to risk them.
