Who uses steel edging?
I'm curious how many of you use steel edging?

I've slowly been adding pieces to my yard over the last two years (at $10 each, it's not something I can do all at once). I probably have about 50 pieces throughout my 1/4 acre yeard so far. I use them to outline my lawn and beds. I love the clean finish they give. It gives my yard the botanical garden look.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
I like them; our local botanical garden has those as well, except I found myself falling over them there. My vision stinks and I wear bifocals so I can't see down very well.
The one place I needed something like that, I used the plastic edging and buried it flush to keep the grass from invading the mulch margin by the brick walkway. I like that too. And I don't fall over it.

I've been thinking of trying it. I need something to keep the mulch in place. My yard is a slope, and everything shifts downhill.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
Call me old fashioned, but I'm a fan of spade cut edges. I don't really like the steel garden edging. It eventually starts to rust and, like Morph, I constantly trip over it. The one use for me might be a combination of a spade cut and plastic or steel edging with the top of the edge buried under the mulch inside the spade cut border.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
I used to do the spade cut when I lived in PA, and I much prefer that, but I feel that looks best with a lush cool season lawn. Where I live, this is really the only way to make a nice separation of bed and what previous homeowners called a lawn. Now that I'm adding a real lawn to my yard, I'm sticking with the metal edging. Less work in the long run.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
I have been looking into something like this but see a lot if conflicting instalation techniques.
One method seems to be to burry the edging so that at most 1/2 inch is pertruding up out of the ground compared to the grass level. The other side would be a wedge cut but only a fraction of the depth of the edging. This is said to prevent heaving in the winter.
The other way seems to be to have the edging higher above the grass level
And holding back the flower bed material. The link from above has pictures that depict this method.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
I buy it at both Home Depot and Lowe's. Each have it for the same price.
I have mine installed so that about an inch visible on the lawn side. On the mulch side, I have the mulch even with the top of the edging, for the most part. I live in NC and don't have a problem with the frost.

Re: Who uses steel edging?
I found one store within 30 minutes of me that has a few pieces in stock, Lowes. The pieces are 4ft in length, and are $8 a pop. That can get pretty pricey. Are their longer lengths available that might be cheaper per foot?

Might be worth it. I've tried so many edging products and they all seem to wear out or look ghetto.

I pay just under $10 for each 8' piece. It's an ongoing project.
