What could these 2 soft spots be in the lawn near neighbors

What could these 2 soft spots be in the lawn near neighbors

Postby JC Paint Workz » September 2nd, 2011, 6:19 am

Ok I noticed yesterday when I was out rolling the new soil 2 soft spots in the lawn. I stepped on them and just with my toe it would sink about 2" down. And it was about 6-8" in dia. So I got the post hole digger out and started removing some dead grass and dirt. Got down about 10-12" and it seemed like from 1-8" was like weak soft mulch like soil kinda looked like shredded fabric in a way. What could be causing these.

I know the neighbor had a couple mole traps in the back yard but the back butts up to a field and ive never seen or heard anything about him having issues in the front.

I got down in there to see if there was any tunnels and I could not tell any. So I filled spots in with top soil compacted and raked level.

This is just scaring me with the Reno starting and dropping seed today. Any ideas??

Shredded texture sounds like either a lot of organic material or a clay intrusion. Although my clay intrusions are usually better described as kind of pointy and flinty looking and tend to be harder than the surrounding soil.

It could be nothing more than an intrusion of something (soil's not consistent and does have pockets of different structure in it), or maybe a spot that's particularly damp, or a slight hollow that tends to collect OM.
