Germany is always blaming our fuel in the US. However look what happened to the Black Forest. They resisted catalists for years. A lot of "Grey Market" cars came into the US and had to be converted to our standards. I see the end result of gas issues, the bottom line is trying to make the car run properly with our fuel which can be a problem.
Search HPFP failures. This is a hugely expensive problem for VW and Audi Common Rail diesels. Costs about 10k to replace the entire fuel system when it fails.

Ok last off topic post, check out the new sealed gas tanks, when the fuel pump fails the whole tank has to be replaced. 2004 BMW 325i w/m56 engine. mostly sold in densely populated cities like La. Ny. etc. $4,000 job at least.

No adding ethanol does nothing to improve performance, it decreases performance. Ethanol is pure political and a complete failure in the USA. Like most US energy policy is completely senseless and ignorant. One of those things Donald Trump talks about when he says other countries are LAUGHING at us for being such fools...
The USA has the worlds richest energy reserves but we refuse to use them. Instead we ship all those jobs and money over seas to buy elsewhere and deprive ourselves, in the meantime making our enemies rich and powerful so they may one day crush us.
OK I will get off my soap box, but this just makes me mad as HE!!

TW- let me preface this by saying that I too believe ethanol is a big political sham.... However- a engine properly tuned to run on ethanol will will actually perform better than the same spec engine on gasoline. I can go into specifics if you would like. To offer up a real world example- My wifes Impreza WRX STI makes 42 more horsepower and 65 more lb/ft torque on e85 ethanol than Sunoco Ultra 94. That equates to around 11 percent. These gains are more substantial on forced induction (Turbocharged or Supercharged) cars than on normally aspirated cars. Remember, I too believe ethanol is a sham but must state the facts as it's kind of my business

Not quite sure how that is possible because of the volumetric energy of gasoline is 34.8 MJ/L verse Ethanol 21.2 MJ/L. But I suspect it has to do with compression ratios and higher octane rating.srm077 wrote: However- a engine properly tuned to run on ethanol will will actually perform better than the same spec engine on gasoline.
IMHO we screwed up years ago by killing diesel passenger vehicles, as diesels are much more efficient and cleaner than gasoline. I mean who in their right mind would want a Honda Accord with sports car power that gets 50 mpg. I guess Europeans and Japanese are crazy driving such vehicles.

The problem with diesels is the fuel stinks and once you get it on you forget about trying to get it off of you. The smell just does not go away.

That is not a problem, it is an opinion. If the US Government, particularly the Nazi's at the EPA, do not want fuel efficient vehicles and conservation. They block just about all new diesel passenger vehicles introduction to US markets. We are the only country in developed countries that do not use diesel powered passenger vehicles.

Forget what I said, diesels do have one pollutant that the epa hates Nox. Oxides of nitrogen they have cleaned their act up, again few years back talking to a Mack truck sales manager telling me all the stuff the have to have on the engines for pollution control and what rpm they test pollutants at, plus I'm sure big brother is worried people will use off road diesel. TW your right Gov. (EPA) has their thumb on it. By the way I hear BMW has a great diesel now in the states if you can afford it. I certainly can't.
