SBM prices
What's everyone paying for soybean meal these days? I was at my local feed mill and a 100# bag was up to $23.50...that seems pretty steep.

Re: SBM prices
$15.50 for 50 pounds, or $31 for 100. That IS pretty steep, actually, but prices are up this year and likely to go...er, upper...again next year.

Re: SBM prices
Corn was up to $18.50 for 100# while alfalfa was $19.50. Pretty sure corn was only $10.50 a year or 2 ago. I really want to switch to organics once my soil deficiencies are corrected but these prices make the switch painful!

Re: SBM prices
I think farmers got hit pretty hard this year between flooding and heat. I drive past some fields that were totally filled with water from the Missouri River flooding this year. It looked like a lake, and the guy lost all of his corn except for a few acres in the back.

Re: SBM prices
Your prices are very low if they are for 100 lbs. why do you consider that painful? I paid $33 for 100 and was happy with that!

Corn is expensive to grow, U of Del had an article about a year ago about testing the minimal amount of fertilizer that can be used to grow corn without runoff of excess. What is prices on sythetics as far as increases.

It's painful because I need like 500 pounds to get a full pound of N! That's nearly $100 per application, compared to about $50 for synthetic. A 50# bag of 19-19-19 costs me $17, which is also a good bit higher than last year.

Re: SBM prices
i saw a news report awhile ago that says all the prices on grain are being driven up due to the ever increasing demand of China. Apparently the US has been the #1 supplier of grains to China, since its the one thing China cannot produce on their own to satisfactorily meet their needs besides oil.

Yeah, that's big enough that I wonder if organics are a reasonable solution...

Maybe lighter organic apps supplemented with urea would be a solution. I really need to improve my soil tilth.

Wow, those prices look great from LI. I pay $20 for 50 lbs of Alfalfa or SBM, corn meal at Restaurant Depot is about $16/50 lbs.

Re: SBM prices
Prices are being driven by two things.
1. Value of the USD going down.
2. Being burned for fuel with your US tax dollars subsidizing it.
Same thing with corn.
