Overdoing Organics
Wow, you can overdo it on organics
I did soybean meal a week ago. Well I was refilling the spreader at one spot in the grass, and some spilled on the grass. I kind of swept it with my hand to make sure it wasn't smothering the grass, and figured that was good. Fast forward to today after we had rain most of the day. I see a yellow spot in the grass about six inches around. It didn't dawn on me until I inspected close that it was from the soybean meal. Wow was it nasty! I didn't think there was that much in that spot, but the rain turned it to mush. It looked and smelled like someone had barfed on the lawn. I tried to clean it up a little, but it was all slippery and greasy, and really couldn't do anything with it. Live an learn.

Re: Overdoing Organics
any time you smother the grass with anything, you're going to see that. Cardboard, grass clippings, kegs, sbm... In fact, I can't really think of anything that you could smother the grass with and not have a hiccup.
If you really did break it up to not smother the grass, you're probably pushing a little too much organics into a lawn that isn't accustomed to its massive change in diet.

I made sure it wasn't smothered, but obviously there was way too much in that spot. It was last Friday that I did it, and it was fine until today after all the rain.

Yeah, I spilled some Milorganite last weekend in a wet area near a sprinkler head. There was some Cyanobacteria ("blue-green algae") today on the soil surface. No harm, no foul. It will go away.

I've got some of that in a few bare areas, now I know what to call it; cool. "Hey kids, we have cyanobacteria on the soil behind the swingset."

Been there, done that, used the garden rake. The five pounds of Milorganite I spilled got nasty, but didn't kill the lawn. It just turned really, really green there for a few weeks.
