Organic Fertilizer Frequency (FL St. Augustine)

Postby evisser4 » July 28th, 2011, 1:00 pm

I live in Central Florida (Zone 8 I think) and my lawn is St. Augustine. Which organic fertilizer schedule do you like better? And why? I already know what and how much to put down, just trying to get the timing right for my conditions. Thanks everyone.

One of our biggest organic proponents has been fertilizing his St. Augustine monthly with CGM.

I see he started this year in April. I'm curious if he is planning to fertilize monthly year round. Or maybe something like this:

Fertilize monthly April-November

I fertilize:

Late March/Early April
Early May
Early June
September
October
November

I also use CGM for my first feeding due to the high nitrogen content. I'm not sold on its alleged pre-m properties though.

Typically I use the worst organic feed, ordinary corn meal, at the lightest application rate, 10 pounds per 1,000, on the federal holiday schedule. Also typically my grass is thin and hardly ever needs mowing. This year I am using the strongest organic feed, corn GLUTEN meal, at double the rate I normally use, every month, and the grass looks fantastic. I'm not sure what the answer is, but what I was doing was slowly leading me to poorer turf. Not sure what I'll do next year. I have found a source for soybean meal and it is inexpensive compared to what I used to find. That might be my choice for next year.
