North Texas help request- Milorganite

Postby jtyrie » July 5th, 2011, 11:14 am

I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex (North Richland Hills) and started using Milorganite this year. I'm paying 12.99 for the 35 pound bag and have seen it at another place for $14.99. I read on here and other boards that people are paying $10.00 or less for a bag. I'm also reading that they are buying it at Lowes & HD. I haven't found it at either of these stores in my area.

So my question: Where are you buying your Milorganite and how much are you paying? I'll continue to use it at 12.99 but if there is a better price out there I'd like to know about it.

I usually buy mine at Lowes since it is closer but Home Depot has it for $1 or 2 cheaper plus I get 10% off with my military discount so I end up paying about $11 per bag. It isn't cheap around here either. I think people in the Midwest that live a state or two away from Wisconsin get it for around $6 a bag when it is on sale but I think it is because they live so close to where it is made.

You might ask the manager of the Lowes and HD why the don't have it. Probably more cost is shipping from Milwaukee.

The HD near me has it for ~12.50 and Lowe's has it for 12.99. I had Lowe's price match HD, so the price was 12.50 and then 10% off.

Where are you getting it? I'm also in DFW and can only find it at Ace - for the same $12.99.

If you are paying less than $12 they are probably closing out for the season.

I'm buying at the Ace Hardware in Colleyville on Colleyville Blvd. I saw it for $14.99 at Marshall Grain. I've checked several HD and Lowes and not found it at any of them. I will try to get with a mgr and ask them why they aren't carrying it.

It's Bermuda. I had a soil test done. I'm doing a combination of synthetic and Milorganite as a result of the test.

Well if you are growing Bermuda grass in DFW area, or any area for that matter I would not recommend using milorganite, Bermuda nitrogen requirements are so high, and Milorganite is so expensive and so weak in nitrogen it is just way too expensive to justify IMHO.

At 5-2-0 requires 20 pounds of product per 1000/ft2. A 36 pound bag cost $12 or $0.33/lb or $6.67/1000/ft2 per application. A good slow release urea cost $1.50/1000/ft2 application. You are paying over a 400% premium for a product that does not work quite as good and no safer than urea. In fact you could easily argue Milorganite is toxic waste.
