Noise coming from my corn

Postby snachs » August 24th, 2010, 1:37 pm

I drive about 40 minutes (each way) to get grains. I stocked up in June and went lighter than I planned this summer so I still have some Soy and Corn in an unconditioned storage room. This morning I heard what sounded like critters crawling around in the bags. It's just this constant crackling sound. I picked up the bags and there is no visible nastiness and I've used both corn and soy in the last 2 weeks and didn't notice anything odd. I think I isolated the sound to the corn but it sounded like it was coming from more than one bag. There is no odor coming from the bags.

I might be in for an unpleasant surprise in the next few weeks as I crack these open...

Suggestion? Use it immediately to avoid any nasty surprises. Since it's tough to overdo corn anyway, you'll be fine.

Corn is just too attractive to "ambinals". So is surplus seed. I purchased a couple of the large Rubbermaid storage tubs. I store my stuff in those. Works fine.

+1 Andy. Although I do wonder if to be an ambinal, it has to be ambidextrous.

I try to limit storage of grains to no more than half a season--better to make an extra trip than get mice. Again.

Corn, soy beans, and just about all the grains are on all critters preferred menu (especially soy beans). You store it, critters will find it. Even though you cannot smell anything. To critters all around your neighborhood, it smells like a bakery baking fresh hot bread 24 x 7. They know where to find you. :amen:

Unless you run it through a freezer for a full day, it will not do well over the winter. Of course in your area just leaving it in an unconditioned storage area might be enough to freeze it. Down here it gets very grungy over the winter. I still use it, even though it is caked together and crawling with critters.

+1 David. I left some soy over the winter. Once. Weevils. Gross.

I used it, and no problems. Weevils don't do well in sunlight, dry conditions, and out in the soil.

But they do die, decompose, and become "meat" type fertilizer. All the protein that started in the bag is still there. It is just in the form of weevils and weevil waste.

David, how do you know that it isn't a Tow Truck Driver? Oh, wait - that's protein too...

Well I could see little critters in there when I looked close but the corn was in good shape...nothing nasty to it. I didn't apply all the bags because these birds are going nuts on my lawn. Milorganite barely keeps them at bay. I need to switch to corn meal and MaGuyver my earthway to handle it better.

Mix it with milorganite and it'll come out of your spreader smoother
