Milorganite mistake
I bought a bag of milorganite a few months ago but only used half of it. The other half sat in the bag on the side of my house until today. I'm not sure why but what's done is done and I can't take it back so don't ask why I did what I did. I'll attribute it to a rookie mistake.
Today I noticed a smell and thought it was a dead rat or bunny decaying when it was really the bag of milorganite. I thought "I'll just spread it around the yard and not waste it." BIG MISTAKE!!! Holy stink!!! I opened the bag and poured it in my spreader but it came out in one big clump and I almost barfed. Then I dumped it in the bag by the alley to spread and let it do its thing. The smell was AWFUL!!! My neighbor came out to check on me because of the smell.
I watered the big clumps to hopefully break them apart so they can break down faster. If this smell doesn't go away by morning I'm afraid I'll be kicked out of the neighborhood. I wish I could post the odor for you to smell for yourself.
Help!!

Re: Milorganite mistake
Water heavily or put on outside boots and stomp to break it up...the stench is probably anaerobic bacteria. Once it re-dries and air gets in there, that should end the issue for you.

Re: Milorganite mistake
Sorry, Morph, but I disagree and have evidence/experience to the contrary...
I did something similar this year. I bought full bags and left them outside instead of the barn. One had a slit in it that I didn't notice. Weeks later, I pour them into a spreader. Lumps. Big Lumps. I made the u,ltimate mistake - I reached it and crushed it. WAY worse. The Milorganite had returned to its "original form".
I spent more than a little time washing my hands. Meanwhile the stink was umm, challenging. I poured tons of water in and spread it all over the lawn. It worked.
However, I'm still a little grossed out...
LOTS of water is the cure. LOTS.

Do you have access to sawdust? Or some cheap pine 2x4's and a dado blade?

I can get the wood, but no dado blade.

Re: Milorganite mistake
It was mostly a joke - the dado blade was just to quickly turn the 2x4's into sawdust.

Re: Milorganite mistake
I'd better check my one and half bag of the milorganite out side the house.
It haven't been raining, I hope it is still fine. Knocking on the wood.

Re: Milorganite mistake
Just checked, my Milorgranite is fine.
California is dry.
Just remind me why I want to put it out side in the first place.
