Milorganite and Scott's Organic fertalizer

Postby telias » July 5th, 2011, 1:27 pm

Hello, newbie here!

My lawn is a mix of fescue and rye grass, with a very thick, clay-like soil. It is very green and thick in the spring, but right about now, in Western NY, it has started to turn yellow. I'm thinking it may be due to lack of water (I started watering again this past weekend), but I figured to lay down some fertilizer and some Milorganite for the first time ever, since I've heard good things.

My question is, for my lawn, which has no trees...should I continue to water it daily during this dry time?

Also, how long before seeing the effects of milorganite? I put 3 total bags of it in my lawn (0.5 acre lot). Should I put more of it down? Will it help with the yellowing of my lawn?

there's lots and lots of info on this board regarding proper watering....daily watering on an established lawn is not good, deeply and infrequently is the mantra...Milorganite's label says 1 bag per 2500 sq ft..what's a half acre, 40,000 sq ft? 16 bags per label directions although many here apply it much heavier.

1/2 acre would be 21,780 square feet, so about nine bags per feeding at bag rate.

That's the entire lot size, not counting land taken up by the house/driveway/patio etc.

I'm thinking 6-7 bags might be good, or just go with 9 and overdo it. :)

I thought about that when I typed it, but wasn't sure if you were reporting lawn or lot size.

Sure, 6-7 sounds good. 9 sounds good. There's an exceptionally wide window with this stuff, and I just dropped 6 bags on 10,000 square feet of lawn for an app rate of close to 22 pounds per thousand. The only effects were the lawn turning darker green from the iron and a slightly oceanic scent...

sorry, brainfart on the math...my own lot is just under a half acre, about 19,000 sq ft. Subtract house, drive, sidewalks and mulch beds and I'm left with just under 12,000 sq ft of lawn. 6 bags of Milorganite is my normal app.
