Milky Spore now or grubex

Postby hutchanne » September 3rd, 2011, 9:05 am

I"m overseeding my lawn now with tall turf fescue/KBG..I have killed the creeping red fescue with roundup..It always dies out in July..

Trying some other grass. But..Can I drop my milky spore now before aerating and overseeding? I have a lot of bare lawn too. Or should I wait until later fall.

Thanks..I'm organic, but having doubts with killing my grubs. I have used nematodes/now trying milky spore for second year..Still have problems..To grubex or not..that is the question too..Thanks

I always thought milky spore took a few years to build up for it to work.

Milky Spore takes 2-3 years to become an effective treatment. And Grubex was effective when the grubs were young and very shallow - like back in July. Dylox is really the only effective thing now, but it is much stronger and far from organic.

Nematodes work, but don't survive well in northern climes.

If you're going to be organic, you have to take a long-term approach and most of the time sacrifice instant gratification.

I gave up on Milky Spore/Nematodes after massive raccoon damage last year (the grubs weren't affecting the turf but because gourmet food for the animals). I applied 3x a year for two years and had applied nematodes in May.

This time of year Dylox works well, Grubex has to go down in mid-June (or earlier for the newer stuff).
