lawn growth slowed

Postby HanLawn » June 18th, 2011, 6:12 pm

I just finished cutting the lawn, first time in 7 days at 3.75 and noticed it had only grown maybe a 1/2-1 inch tops, and only about 30% of the blades had even done that based off the amount of clippings I saw being ejected {reel mower}. I wonder if all the 90-100 degree days we have had caused this, and will faster growth resume now that the heatwave has broke, or are we in summer mode already?

Cooler weather and rain will move it along but not as fast as spring was. You should be coming to a point where mowing every three days is a thing of the past. Things will pick back up this fall.

Depends, really. If the weather cools back down and it rains, growth will resume again but at a slower rate (soil temperatures are warmer than spring). If the rains don't come back, or temperatures go up again, it's now summer on your lawn.

If you want growth to resume, I'm having great fortune with the BL Kelp Help, including explosive growth on trees and shrubs. Double the normal rate, but water in very well.

Lawn has definitely slowed. In my parts, it's mainly due to lack of water. Right now it's just once a week and that's not coming close to the 1/3 rule but just so the cut looks neat and trim. Color has definitely lightened too, as it does every summer. Still, i am glad I don't have to mow when it's wet.

I'm ready for the accelerated growth to stop! I'm still mowing every other day and cutting 2 inches off each time. It's starting to get a little old. All the rain and cool weather we've had are really helping the grass grow (as well as large amounts of corn meal, milorganite, BL soil conditioner, etc.).

slow growth is good for me

Postby ROC » June 20th, 2011, 8:28 am

One of my main goals this year is to reduce spring growth. I have a lot going on this year so time management is really important. I just mowed the yard for the 4th time this year. June 14th was the first time I used a product that contained nitrogen. So far I have enjoyed the slow growth that comes from not fertilizing.
8400 square feet of loam soil (49% sand, 34% silt, 17% clay) with a pH of 7.7 in zone 5.
