*****CAUTION MILORGANITE HAS CHANGED*****

Postby HanLawn » September 18th, 2011, 2:13 pm

Picked up and spread milorganite today, and noticed a few things on the bag I dont recall seeing before

1. the usual 1 bag per 2500 sq ft now says 1 bag per 2,900 square feet in Maryland

2. Out of the 5% total nitrogen content- 2% is water soluble, and 3% insoluble derived from bio-solids-I do not remember the old bags containing so much {40% of total} water soluble nitrogen?

does anyone have any older bags laying around they can check to see if the above are indeed changes?

EDIT ....found a pdf of the older bag online IT HAS CHANGED...old label listed only 0.5% water soluble nitrogen, and 4.5 insoluble nitrogen from biosolids !!!!!!! A HUGE DIFFERENCE

HOW does this affect those who pour tons of it on their lawns with now having so much water soluble nitrogen in it???????

Here is the old label Click here for more information

Looks like I'll be having to find another iron source when the old stuff is gone. 2% water soluble nitrogen still allows me 50 pounds per thousand before reaching the 1 pound limit, but I don't wish to add that much just so it can leach out.

Possibly better for us Bermuda folks who are having trouble with organic only feeding?

so much for the "dump milorganite on any day that ends in Y" This is a game changer for those who heavily apply and do so as much as weekly. Wonder why and how the change was made?

Quite possibly. 25 per K would deliver 0.5 pounds fast N, 0.75 pounds slow N.

It still has a place in northern lawn care, but not early in spring or during summer quite so much any longer.

For bag rate, weekly would still be OK as you won't pass the 1.0 pounds N limit. But during summer? Perhaps not.

Looks like I rely more on Moss Out and soybean meal next year...

This is very disappointing to me, as it is basically all I use,all season. I am now beginning to wonder if the product changed before the label did, as I have noticed abnormally fast growing grass all season, even during the hottest times this past summer?

What do you think the source of the 2% quick release nitrogen is? still a 100% "organic" fertilizer? Was POOP getting too expensive that they had to cut it with this quick release N ????????

I've no idea what the source is--I doubt they added anything, it's more likely a process change. Still, yes, that means I won't be dumping like I did. It's grains all summer--which I'm not a hundred percent thrilled with, either. Although Milo was more expensive, I was happier with the idea of pulling from the waste stream instead of the food stream.

I just checked the bags I bought on Saturday and yep, those are 2% fast-release N as well. No problem for September to November.

I wonder if this applies to the 50lb "classic" bags as well?

Website still lists the same analysis for the pro, but who knows if it actually changed on the bags

Wow, I was going to put it down again next week at a heavy rate. I've been using urea as well, now this throws everything off.

I'm not seeing it as a disappointment or anything else. I see it as an adjustment. OK, so I adjust my schedules and have to think of another way to pour on the OM. So? The world changes. You 30-somethings need to learn something - the world always changes and you have to adapt --- it has changed so much in my 59 years - why do you think it should freeze the way it was when you were 25 years old. Get over it and adapt. End of lecture #4583.

30-somethings. Heh, thank you. But no. :-)

Yeah, but Milo hasn't had an appreciable change in ages--they did go from 6-2-0 to 5-2-0 recently, but that was minor. That much soluble N is a serious change in the product.

I'm always disappointed when the Perfect Product changes and becomes less perfect.

I wonder if the diet has changed in Milwaukee. Must be that crazy governor who took on the teachers union.

sorry, no 30 year old here either! It is a huge change, and for those of us with smaller lawns who generally purchase it 1 or 2 bags at a time.......on a sunday ,at the local big box store......a complete change to now have to look for "grain stores" and the like

Coke once made a big change also.........

I know that VERY well. I was Pepsi's Chief Architect. The Headquarters closed down to celebrate.

I didn't say that we had to LIKE the change. I'm saying there will be many changes, and people need to work them in and move on. It won't change because someone cries in their beer.

Wow you are young. They change the flavor around 1985 or so. "New coke". I think they got rid of it two years later. Flavor was sweeter if I recall, more like Pepsi.
