Blood meal?
When is the best time to apply blood meal? Can it be used as my last application of the year? I can get it local here for $35 for a 50lb bag.

Anytime it's not freezing. A word of warning: some people don't like the smell (I don't mind it). If you get a LIGHT rain, though, it can be pretty pronounced.

Sure, but I'd put it down a little earlier than I would Urea. The process does involve the microherd, although it's much quicker than grains.

I hate you.

Two more questions. How much should I apply and how often?

Re: Blood meal?
Generally, it's something like 13-0-0 NPK, but I don't like to think of it that way. It is on-the-border between fast-release and slow-release. It gives a burst and then keeps delivering for up to 90 days. It is a favored material for the microherd. If you follow the NPK, you could put down up to about 7 lbs per 1000 sq ft, but I wouldn't -- it could get a little funky. 4 lbs per thousand for half a pound of N, maybe, and add something else (like a grain) 2-3 weeks later to fill out the 1 pound. Repeat at 2-3 month intervals, but remember to keep track of getting the other nutrients covered somehow.

I am not sure as I don't know the numbers on it. I would think 5-7lbss per 1000sqft monthly would be good. I take it you found that link off ebay I posted?

What would you suggest for a grain? Would milorganite be good for the other nutrients?

Just one warning. Bloodmeal is a welcome mat for uninvited guest, most of which are not desirable. The only thing you will not see is deer or rabbits.

Only a soil test can indicate what other nutrients you need to be managing, but at 5-2-0, there ain't a lot of P or K in Milorganite. See 5,000 other threads here on ways to supplement P and K.

I'm going to pick up a bag next Friday and give it a try. I'm kinda nervous about using blood meal now but I'll give it a try and see what happens. I hope I don't regret it.

It supposedly also draws Bears, but my garbage pails do that just fine - with or without blood meal on the property.

No blood meal used here lately, but Yogi the bear scattered trash around the yard overnight anyway.

I had no problems with applying blood meal. It's good stuff I will be applying it every 2-3 months next year.
