Best Choice of Fertilizer for this Weekend
Hi there. Want to feed lawn this weekend. Local feed store out of SBM and Cottonseed. CGM only special order and very $$$ here. What's best choice: cracked corn or alfalfa pellets. I would lean toward Alf, but note that alfalfa has ingredients that I'm not sure about: dehydrated alfalfa and sodium bentonite. Maybe a little of both?? Thank you!

Both cracked corn and alfalfa are pretty low in Nitrogen. Alfalfa has naturally-occurring Triacontanol, a natural growth stimulant.

+1 Andy. Given the low-N nature, if that's what you're looking for I'd be inclined to skip it and try again next week.

A little soil support and growth hormone cant hurt either, so I'll put something, while I keep checking for high N stuff. Is that alfalfa going to be ok w/ those ingredients? There was a discussion elsewhere but it was left unresolved. Thanks!

Yes, that's fine. Sodium bentonite is a drying agent (an impure clay), probably to keep the dehydrated alfalfa from getting sticky in the bag and turning into a big lump of re-hydrated alfalfa.
It's edible, and rarely used at more than 1% of the mass.
Dehydrated alfalfa is heat dried to remove water, shrink it, and make shipment easier and cheaper. No problems there; it rehydrates when damp and rots like normal alfalfa.
The alfalfa itself is about 2.5-1-2, so a low-nitrogen hit, but does contain the growth hormones, so there's absolutely no issue with adding it.

got lucky, they found two bags of CSM after all. That's going down tonight. Alfalfa will get its day soon enough.
