Winterizer application if root growth never ceases?

I am still waiting on applying the winterizer. My yard is so wet now I don't want to walk in some parts of it and as nclawnguy noted we are getting more rain for the next 4-5 days.

I also dropped some 35-0-5 and still mowing regularly.

I am on the fence here; but I plan to drop another lbs of nitrogen/k the middle of January. If the yard does go dormant then I'll call it "winterized".

If the temps just don't go down and dormancy is avoided then the fertilizer (synthetic) will be last until next fall/winter.

I've lived in NC since 2004, can't remember a year when I had such activity in my lawn at Christmas..grass is growing like crazy, some weeds are sprouting, was hoping for a cold spell to kill the weeds. Oh well, looks like my mower will be working ot this year.

This is making me re-think not hitting my lawn with something to kill the chickweed that has come from out of nowhere to be a real nuisance.

This year is definitely going to be different.

Last year, I dropped my Urea on Dec 3 and cleaned up my equipment for the winter. As a joke, I mowed in 4 bags of leaves on Jan 1, so I could tell MorpheusPA I was ahead of him in the OM category for 2011. (if only for 1 day) :D

This year I have yet to drop my urea. I just filled up my gas container. I doubt I am going to stop mowing anytime soon. Maybe Mid January I will know if I can stop, but right now everything is growing, although it has slowed down. Weather for the next week, lows in the mid 30s and highs in the 50s.

I will say, I love when we get a light frost and it shows on everyones Warm season grass lawns, except mine. The KBG and TTTF just smiles right back and says, "Is that all you got?" :)

And there is nothing close to the color.

I put down a half app of fertilizer a few weeks ago and it appeared to cause me a problem. See: Click here for more information Has anyone else seen this? Funny thing is I noticed the grass at my work today has the same exact thing going on.

Regarding spring fertilizer apps, the guys at NC State say never fertilize AFTER March 15th in NC. I've followed that but to be honest have not been impressed with the early summer results and I have some neighbors who fertilize around the year and their lawns looks great. So many factors I suppose...

Weogojmi, I saw that earlier and it caused me to pause and think about applying the "winterizer" app given all of the rain and mild weather. My soil has been wet for weeks now and I also have some drainage problems that makes it worse. I think I will wait until Jan. and hope for some drying out.

Yea, I'm not sure if I should fertilize again this year as well. Funny thing though is I woke up this morning after a lot more rain (but warmer temps) last night and the grass looks a lot better. Why can't this be an exact science... :ugeek:

I dropped Urea on Dec 5, and have mowed once since then. It didn't cause a flush of new topgrowth but I suspect it was still too early. I may drop another half app sometime around Jan 1.

I haven't measured the grass since I last mowed, and I suspect it has grown some. It is nice and even so I could probably leave it for the winter unless it grows some more.

Air temps have been fluctuating here in the Tennessee Valley. We've been having weather in the 60s lately, but we've also had some frigid days. The nearest soil data says it's hovering around 50 degrees at a 2 inch depth, but that station is warmer than I think we are here. I'm guessing it's about 45 degrees, give or take.

+1
I have noticed an increase in chickweed this year. Like you, it has come out of nowhere. Never really had a problem with it in the past. I need to find WBGCCO somewhere.

I may put down more urea before new years in the front. Not sure if I should add any to the fescue in the back.

The soil temps here were 55F this morning at 8:00AM. If I could have predicted this weather pattern I could have put down more Milorganite. :)

I finally put out my “winterizer” app today. The ground is as dry as it is going to get before some light rain tonight and tomorrow so this looked like now or never. The 10 day forecast shows 60s/40s for three days and then 50s/high 20s for the rest. Soil temp is 49 now.
