To overseed or not?

When can you tell if your grass will grow back when you have a lot of yellow areas or if you should overseed? Last year I overseeded with Lesco blend (TTF/KBJ) and this spring grass, back yard grass came back thick-possibly too thick. When I overseeded last fall, areas were bare due to yellow spots but in spring when grass grew in it was very thick due to some other type of grass growing that I did not see last Aug during overseed. This other grass is very thick and grows way longer than regular grass but once cut looks like the other grass. In areas where grass comes in extremely thick, every year these large areas brown up and die July. In front yard where there is a large tree and grass is thinner, the grass now looks great. I dont know what to do with the backyard due to this constant problem. I was thinking about overseeding with KBJ blends that can take full sun and some shade so at least it can repair it self when this happens. What do you think?
