To mow or not to mow

Postby xapabwa » December 31st, 2011, 6:52 pm

Okay, I was out walking the fescue in the back today searching for sprouting weeds and I'm thinking about mowing one last time tomorrow. I put my winterizer down on December 2nd figuring that winter certainly had to be just around the corner, but once again - I was wrong. I've not had much top growth, but I do think I've had some. The temps hit 62 here today and are supposed to top out around 59 tomorrow. Monday it's only supposed to be in the 40s and then Tuesday and Wednesday it's not supposed to make it out of the low 30s. Will it stress tall fescue if I take 1/4" to 1/2" off two days before temps drop into the low 30s? I'm not so much worried about the existing fescue, but was wondering about the sproutlings from my overseed at the beginning of October. Height right now is about 2 1/2".

Thanks!

Flo

If it needs mowing...mow it. No real problems there.

Thanks, Morph! Supposed to be nice here again today, so I'll put mowing on the list along with mulch mowing the stray oak leaves that have fallen over the past few weeks.

Man, all I wanted was to improve my lawn when I stumbled into this site at the suggestion of dchall, and you guys already have me mowing on Xmas day before going to the in-laws ;). Heck, I had some time to spare yesterday so my first thoughts were as follows; Tenacity?, Milo?, shampoo?... I did the first two. Still so much to learn, but I'm already getting compliments on my lawn.

Yup. I noticed some tulips pushing up through the mulch beds today.

Well, I sprayed round up on the chickweed and other nasty winter weeds I have growing in the zoysia out front. Saw the little devils start to shrivel a couple hours after spraying so I got my instant gratification fix for the day! Walked the fescue in the back looking for little weeds sprouting and yanked them as I saw them. Got all the newly fallen leaves (some of the oaks tend to hang on longer than the others) raked away from the fence and into a pile and then got out the mower. Made two passes on the lawn and couldn't detect that I was cutting any grass at 2 inches so I moved onto mulch my leaves. Mulched up all of the leaves and the mower ran out of gas. So, I think I'm calling it quits for the season. Since I overseeded the first of October, I didn't put down any PreM this year. I've noticed that I still have many, many little worm volcanos out in the fescue and I usually find little tiny weeds sprouting right around these. Any thoughts on whether this is because I core aerated in September and disturbed weed seeds under the surface? There aren't many weeds at all in the fescue, so I'm not going to complain. But I have noticed worm activity in the same spot when I bend down to pull a sprouting weed when I see one.

If I use a PreM in March, will I still have weeds here and there when the worms all start doing their thing again in the spring? Give a choice of a few weeds and an abundance of earthworms, I'll take my worms any day of the week, but I was just wondering if PreM still works or might only be slightly less effective with such a slight distrubance of the surface soil.
