Side question.. Do you dig up your cannas?

nothing0, I just saw your question about cannas. I didn't see it last time. Maybe I thought it was your signature. :)
Anyways, I just dug them last week. It's in the garage right now. I have not prepare them yet. I usually put them in trash plastic bag with peat moss then I store them in the basement. I lost some last year. I haven't posted much on other forums too since I have been very busy with the family room project.

Do you also have cannas? How do you overwinter them?

Hey looking good. Its already darker than your neighbors! I love the color! :)

I'm considering cutting down the cannas and leaving them in the ground. Its the first year that we had them. They went crazy! I have some that are 6' tall and all are still blooming. (We haven't had a hard freeze yet) So I wonder how many will survive if I just leave 'em?

I think they're hardy upto zone 7. I think the ground doesn't freeze in zone 7. Ours does 3-4 ft deep. Are you in zone 6? I'm not sure if it's going to make it. Some folks had luck on their cannas that were near the foundation. I planted a pampas grass(zone 7 hardy) on south side close to foundation but never came back.

Yup.

Thanks simpson, binabina and LawnStriper! :)

Yesterday, brought mower height down to 2.25" and mowed-bagged. 4 more days, half dose of fertilizer will be applied again.

Cannas aren't hardy in a Zone 6 garden--I have to dig mine up and bring them in (although maybe a southern exposure and winter mulching might do it). Pampas grass usually is, however, and I see plenty around here.

In other news, Simpl3kid, that's a fantastic renovation!

Eric, I've been following yours and GaryInChicago's fertilizing suggestions to me before. :D

I will surely need your help again next spring especially about the weeds. :)

Hi eriocaulon,

I really would like to get rid of poa annua. I'm seeing more. They are also producing seedheads now. I really didn't have poa annua in my previous lawn. Maybe, the seeds I bought contained poa annua.

I've read somewhere on our forum that Certainty is very expensive. My wife is going to kill me if she hears about the price. I really would like to save as much as possible. Like what you said previously, I can get some from you. How much would it cost?

Thanks.

Neil

Certainty is about $130 for a lifetime supply.

It doesn't work all that well on Poa A unless you get it right when it germinates. Your best bet is to RU the Poa A and keep a very tight pre-M barrier down for the next few years. In the Northeast we had a very cold/rainy May and June which washed away many of our pre-M barriers around 30 days early so we got new Poa in July.

I'm going for 3x next year, mid-March, early June and then September.

That color and density look great; don't worry about the broadleaf weeds. WBG will take care of them next spring.

Thanks for the info jglongisland!

Just an update. I did the final mow today. The growth from the last time I mowed (about 3 weeks) was really short. I brought down the mower height to 2". The weeds did grow though and bloomed. :D Those friggin weeds are tough! GRRR! They are still alive. We really haven't seen a continues temp of below 30s. It was only 1 time. Looks like it's going to be an awesome winter! Hopefully! :)

I've also spread urea today using 6 at the setting. For the whole 8000 sqft lawn, I spent almost 25 lbs. I really didn't do any math since I don't know the formula. :D I also wanted to make it very simple for me. So what do you think about 25 lbs for 8000 sqft? Am I short or just right?

I'll also correct the pictures I have posted previously on this thread since the website where I was hosting it was brought down. It was my friend's website.

Yeah, like jg said, Certainty is not really good for poa a and personally, I don't even try to use it on that. It works really well on poa trivialis though, but it may be harder for you to identify that grass at this point. Your best bet is to make sure you have pre-emergent coverage for the area affected every spring/fall for a few years and maybe handpick any you see now. As you probably won't need much, PM me if you want some Certainty for poa triv.
