Anyone ever try any of the Roots products?

Postby crewdawg » January 1st, 2012, 3:57 am

Went to Lesco the other day to pick up some Tenacity. They didn't have any Yucca extract, but mentioned a few other products. One was a Lebanonturf product called Roots Agriplex. The guy at the store was reasonably enthusiastic about it, so I thought I'd check and see if anyone had any experience with it. At ~$30 for a few gallons of the stuff it doesn't break the bank...

Here is what I'm talkin about

There are two problems with pre-mix micronutrient solutions. The first is that you are paying for the shipping of something that is 99% water, even if the shipping is only from the the manufacturer to the Lesco store. It costs money. The second problem is that any pre-mix is of specific quantities of each nutrient. That may not be the right quantity for your lawn. For example, what if you have plenty of Manganese and need double the amount of Boron? The Manganese could act as an antagonist of Iron.

These products are more aimed at golf courses, etc. For us, the best answer is brew-your-own based on the soil test results.

And the product isn't a replacement for Yucca extract anyway. You asked about Apples and he's trying to sell you watermelons...

Mixed with a bit of orange just for flavor. :-)

This is more of an iron spray, and kind of expensive for that. It's a lot cheaper to make your own--$30 will get you about 25 pounds of ferrous sulfate, sufficient at 4 ounces per thousand square feet to cover quite a lot of surface area.

Sooo, you're sayin don't get it ;). I just like lookin around while I'm there (Lesco). I do the same thing in my other expensive hobby (180gallon reef tank).

Always on the lookout for magic in a bottle.

In all honesty, I need to buy a quality sprayer and learn how to properly use it as my next lesson. Seems I alway over apply... Need to fill the tank with water or something and learn how fast to walk while spraying.

Get yourself some tracker and mark out an area on your driveway that is a nice manageable size (i.e. 500 sq. ft. or 1,000 sq. ft.). If you really want to be a psycho, measure out exactly 3 gallons and put it in. Spray the area, then measure what is left. Then you just have to do the math.
