Turf alternatives PDF Print E-mail

I live in the desert so I got interested in finding alternatives to the traditional turf grasses like KBG. KBG is the best choice for a cool season lawn in most cases, but I wanted to find something that required less water.

Where I live, we get nearly all of our water as snow and usually get less than an inch of water a month from June through August. Precipitation levels that would be considered severe drought in most of the US would be considered unusually wet years here.

Maintenance Schedule For Cool Season Lawns

Products that are mentioned and pictured below are only examples, not recommendations. There are similar products available by other brand names that you might prefer.

Mid-Late March

1. March is a great time to clean up the yard and begin the year’s maintenance regimen. The first thing to do is rake. Using a leaf rake might be best so as not to damage the soil's fragile condition at this time. The soil is likely still very moist, so rake lightly to stand the grass blades, unbind matting, and also clear away debris.

Steps to new lawn establishment

1. Get a soil test. Call your nearest County Extension Service for a test kit and sampling instructions. It will likely take two weeks for results. If you need to apply sulfur, lime, or any other amendment per test recommendation (that is not applied in Step 6), you can do it after seeding if you don't get results back in time.

Mature shade trees, shrubs, bushes and flower beds make for a beautiful landscape and provide a more comfortable environment in the heat of summer.  Maintaining a quality lawn in the shade is challenging but in most cases is quite possible as long as some sunlight reaches the ground.
