Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
They have literally destroyed this tree. Is there any recommended product to apply? The leaves have many holes in them and it doesn't seem to be growing much anymore.

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
I have a weeping cherry and mine has a bunch of holes in the leaves too. I'm also wondering what would be best to treat it
Thanks in Advance,
James

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
No clue, sorry. As a guess, I might start with simple soapy water and see if that helps (spray with 1 oz shampoo, any type, per gallon water). Most bugs hate soap.
Graduate to a pyrethrin-based insecticide if that doesn't do it, and step up from there to the less ecologically-friendly ones.

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
I did a little looking around. Seems japanese beetles love weeping cherrys and other insects espcially ants (if your branchs touch the ground). They said to trim branchs to where they dont touch ground. And then apply bayer advanced pest & insect control. Or another one said to spray with Sevin insect spray and it will keep leafs healthy all summer. I guess its just insects eating it.
There was another post I seen that said if theres yellow spots and then the spot falls out and creates a hole, then that could be a type of fungus/disease and they recommended taking a few of the leafs to the local nursery cause different areas have different problems.
I guess I'm going to try the Bayer stuff and see how it works. My leafs are even worse this year then last. They keep going at it I'll have no tree left in 2-3 years. It does not help I live right in front of a corn field, I get all the insects/critters
Sometimes I forget I have google lol man I typed in holes in weeping cherry leafs and BAM I got slapped in the face!

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
Fortunately it's quite late for Japanese beetles, so that's not likely to be much of an issue at this time. Other critters, sure.

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
Not sure about orig poster but my marks/holes have been there all summer. So I'm thinking it's a little of everything.
Is it too late in the year to treat. Should I treat now and next spring or just next spring.

You can treat it now to protect the leaves for late summer and early fall--no harm done there. Next year, start early and maybe use a systemic insecticide that will render the leaves distasteful or poisonous to insects.

Figured I'd post this for those like me that had no clue what a "systemic insecticide" was:
Most insecticide concentrates are sprayed on the plant where the insecticide material rests on the leaf or blade surface. A systemic insecticide works from the inside out instead of only on the exterior surface of the treated plant. The systemic action of Merit granules gives you two distinct advantages over conventional granules or sprays.
The first advantage is long term control. A surface application is constantly exposed to the elements. Rainfall, irrigation and sunlight all play a part in the demise of the insecticide. A systemic product is protected by the elements because it remains inside the plant's leaves, stems or blades.
The second advantage of systemic insecticides over conventional insecticides is that the entire plant is protected from attack by insects, grubs, mites. Root systems, stems and leaf portions of the plant all contain a small amount of your insecticide, not just the leaf surface.
Thanks in Advance,
James

Re: Weeping Cherry being eaten by bugs
Sorry i forgot I had posted about this haha.
Well, it has been like this all season. It's been awful. I'll take a picture later to show you how few of leaves are even left on it. We fertilized it in spring but it didn't seem to help much.

If it's like mine, it's winter moths. In early spring, they're little green worms.... they become these grey moths that you see in the winter around your porch light. They are killing my fruit trees. If yours are like mine, they don't blossom as much either because the worms eat the blossoms
Spinosad or Carbaryl is supposed to work on them but you have to catch them just after they hatch. They hatch when the weather gets to about 40 degrees... check for them and then spray before they do their damage.
