Privacy screen
Anyone have any ideas on privacy screens? My house borders another house and he does not maintain his property at all.it's discouraging when I'm outside breaking my back to make my property look nice. I need something that will grow vertically.
I have a serious deer problem so arborvitae are out.

Look up fast growing trees website. They have lots of cool things.
I have Leland cypress trees in my back yard. I planted them 2 falls ago and they have put on 5-7 feet.

Deer like Arborvitae? That's not good. I was thinking of planting some in my yard, but I have a major deer problem as well. Bummer.

Simpson, those are very nice. EXACTLY what I am looking for. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?
I wonder if there are any good places to order online.

Re: Privacy screen
I bought every tree my local nursery had at the time. I got 23 trees for $180.00 some of the trees were 5-6 feet tall already but most were under 2 feet. You should be able to find them cheap at the end of the season. They go for under $10 a tree around me. Like I said in one if the threads buy the smaller trees. They establish faster and grow better. My small trees are just as tall as the bigger ones now.

According to the rutgers site, leyland cypress will get eaten by deer. Man do I hate deer. I would love to do spruce but I just don't have the budget right now.

Manhattan Euonymus and Skip Laurels both make a great screen.

Take a look at Thuja "Green Giant" which is a cross between Plicata and Standishii. From what I have read they are deer resistant, grow a few feet per year, and spread out at the base so you don't need as many as you would with something like arborvitae. They can get quite large however, so either prune them yearly or make sure they have enough room.

Re: Privacy screen
I have Green Giants and love them, but wouldn't call them deer-resistant really. If they're on the deer's path, they'll get eaten--but the deer won't divert just to nibble at them.
My 2' Green Giants from two years ago are now 8' tall, and the sleep/creep/leap rule applies to them. I'm expecting more growth next year.

Deer seem to eat everything, I'm surprised my car isn't missing parts every winter from their grazing. From what I have read the Emerald Green Thuja can't tolerate the winter graze and they get that mushroom shape, but the Green Giants can tolerate it and regrow...do you find this to be the case Morph?

I put in 28 green giants along my property line, and I like them a lot. There are deer in the area, but I haven't seen any damage from them yet.

Fortunately, I'm deer-free, but the rabbits nibble at the bases. They do get a little mushroomy, but it recovers every spring back to the nice pyramid.
Edging the grass there also makes them a bit mushroomy (I have to expand their beds next year), but ditto. It all grows back, thicker than before.
So far, I give the Green Giants a score of A for the location where I have them. Fast-growing if fed, nice shape, don't collapse under snow (except very temporarily), and a gorgeous dark green.
