Not A "Mast Year"?

Postby andy10917 » October 23rd, 2011, 1:47 pm

After two consecutive "mast years" (years in which Oaks produce unusually high numbers of acorns), this year is seeming unusually low for acorn production.

Is my area alone, or are others seeing the same?

Ditto. Fewer acorns, few and lower quality fruit from fruiting trees, fewer burrs from my tree, and so on.

Trees did not seem to enjoy this year much, and I had trouble pushing mine for extremely fast growth. I only got moderately fast.

Just noticed that, thank G_D. Much less material for the squirrels to work with as they dig up the lawn. I'm blaming everything on Irene (but this is a good thing, I hate acorns).

Nothing like last year, buy a nice crop none the less.

Definitely not abnormally low here.

Funny, I noticed more from my 2 pin oaks compared to last year.

I may be changing my answer.

Must've still been a lot left in the trees that I missed, because we have a ton now.

It's actually messing up deer season around here because their food source is so abundant that they aren't concentrated in any one area.

WOW! I was just thinking about posting about too many acorns. Our lawn is just covered with them, it sounds like I'm mowing gravel whenever I mow. Our yard is just completely covered around our single oak tree, to the extent that I am thinking about using my brothers vacuum to suck them up. So I am surprised to hear that you guys are experiencing the opposite.
