Impatiens issues

Postby srm077 » June 2nd, 2011, 5:19 pm

So I have a few hundred impatiens (super elfin) in some areas that get full sun. Guess what, they are not very happy. I told my wife that the would not be able to handle it but she swore they could. Well I got them home from the nursery and hardened them for a week or so and then the Wifey planted them. We had decent weather partly cloudy mild days and lots of rain for the week after i planted them.

Fast forward to this week.... Straight to 92 and sunny, 85, and sunny, 76 and sunny, 72 today and sunny. They have been kept moist so I'm hoping for the best but does anyone have any tips. I'd hate to loose them but really don't want to dig them all up and move them.

Impatiens will tolerate some sun...keyword being some...early and late in the day. Or both is fine.

Noon to about 3 PM during summer is just too much for them, although some might adjust to it (I have a set that does OK in 2 PM to 8 PM sun).

The hot weather shocked the heck out of them, too.

For right now, barring moving to a better location, keep them constantly moist, never dry, never soaked. And hope.

I have to water mine a LOT of times when its that hot. Don't fret though, I've seen them bounce back when I thought for SURE they were gone.

I have a strip of about 375 fiesta double impatiens that can get wilted in mid-day sun for about 4-6 weeks in the peak of the summer. This year I'm going to setup a drip zone for them with the cheap home depot hoses and an inexpensive timer; I'll have it run for an hour a day from 12-1 PM. I wanted to setup a zone in my system but I ran out of wires.

The super elfins are much hardier than the doubles; they'll bounce back (usually within 30 minutes of a good watering). I always plant each one with a handful of pre-moistened TerraSorb which does help quite a bit.

I couldn't stand it..... I dug them up, 452 (yup, I counted so I can bribe the Wife... Ha, ha, ha.) and moved them to multiple happy homes in the back gardens. I have enough to worry about with the lawn and all the hanging baskets and planters. Off to the nursery in the morning..... What should I replace them with? I need a bedding full sun plant in pinks, white, reds. Lots of flowers a must! I know what I will mostly buy but what would you suggest. I really need to take a few pictures- I think you all would be impressed with my gardens.

Vinca need virtually no water once established. Petunia, argerstum, verbena, calibtachoa are all good.

Zinnia, marigold, Melampodium, and salvia are all pretty heat-hardy and don't require much care in full sun as well.

I am torn between Vinca and Petunia's. Morph- Have a bunch of your suggestions already in many areas. Guess I'll see what looks good in the morning. Most likely I will break the 2000 mark on annuals tomorrow. I need invest in a greenhouse and start growing my own.

Try something a little more "exotic" like verbena, maybe. The stuff's adorable, thrives in heat, it's readily available, and you can find it in mauve, purple, red, and white.

Celosia's another suggestion, and a heat-lover, but taller--up to 12" or so. Red, orange, and pure gold are the three available colors, usually.

Already have a bunch or verbena- but may add a bit more to the larger beds for interest- Good idea! Thanks.

Geraniums hardly bat an eye at sun that melts impatiens, but you still need to water.

Geraniums never do for me in the heat--the greenery's fine, but the flowers fade and they're hesitant to send more. Food, no food, doesn't matter. No blooms, or weak, blasted ones.

Blue daze, cosmos, sunflower (dwarf), and dusty miller are a few more ideas. Heliotrope is great, but has to be watered and some find it kind of old-fashioned. I love it, Marine variety especially.

Dahlia's great, but remember that the flowers nod downward.

Even dwarf canna will probably be too tall, but they adore hot weather.

Angelonia would be great if you can work with it, I never seem to have much luck. The same with statice.

Lantana will do well, but if you feed it the thing tends to be a gorgeous plant with six foot deep roots. Just cut it off in fall and let them rot.

We are getting hit with record heat. Around 100 most days.

Every year I have impatiens in pots on porches and they almost always do great for me if I don't over water them and get hit with fungus.

But, this year, no matter what they are all simply getting fungus and dying. If you water them enough to beat the heat, they get fungus and die. But, on a brighter note, the drought is keeping the snails in check so that my hostas are having the best year ever.

Morph I had the same problem the last few years with my geraniums. This year after they started to do the same thing I switched up the watering. They need lots of water everyday or other day. The flowers on mine would not bloom well but the leaves would still look good. I am watering them more now and they look great. Full of blooms very attractive flower.

I refuse. :-) My garden got watered after a week, and mostly because I needed to feed it.

I'll water pots, but the gardens I prefer a bit more xeriscaped. This week is an exception, I'll probably have to water every third day.

That's not going to happen with geraniums. They will just wait till fall rains come back. They also don't like much feeding.

Yep, so the geraniums go in pots, if I use 'em at all. They're nice, I like them, but they just won't respond to the garden care level around here.

I'm a perpetual feeder, half rate to slightly less every week, plus organics.
