HUGE harvest tonight...Of Hornworms.

HUGE harvest tonight...Of Hornworms.

Postby jfd.lew » September 6th, 2011, 9:19 pm

Man I wish my wife would let me post the video! I found I have a good helping of hornworms in my garden this year. I went out and saw their droppings (HUGE!) and knew they were in there somewhere. I got lucky by not getting any last year. After about 10 minutes of searching, I saw him. Then another. And another. Its crazy how once you see one, you see all of them.

My 4 year old decided she wanted to scare Mom, so I plucked the biggest, juiciest one I could find and brought him inside to meet the wife. She kicked me. She honest to God kicked me. :-)

After 20 minutes or so I had removed 6 or 7 finger sized worms. I know there's more in there, I just can't get in. The maters are too thick. A storm laid everything against the fence, bending the hell out of the cages. The three plants in this container have all grown together into a thick mater 'wall.'

Last year I probably plucked 3-4 dozen over the course of the summer
This season I have only seen 3. And the last one I saw was covered in parasitic wasp eggs. I left him be.

I don't know if the extremely hot and dry weather had anything to do with having fewer worms.

My wife messed around with a Topsy-Turvy last year for tomatoes. These guys manage to destroy all the plants and tomatoes. Needless to say we didn't get any tomatoes, but he got quite a feast. I probably could have been more on top of it but didn't even notice it until it had pretty much devoured the entire plant.

it is funny how once you spot one you soon spot all the others! My 4 yr old daughter liked playing with them this summer....I liked stepping on them and watching them blow green goo all over!
