Hmmm this really sucks. My wife is kinda PO'd because the entire hellstrip is yellow! Not sure if I should attempt to get grass grown (moonlight SLT, Bewitched, Bedazzeled mix) before they arrive in late Sept.

5 LBs of the seed cost me $57 shipped.

On the up side, a pipe puller doesn't do too much damage, and KBG will spread the first spring quite nicely.

You might want to start some pots to transplant into there (still workable in October) for faster repair, but if you don't I still don't think you'll have an issue.

The only issue you will likely have is where they dig holes for stuff. The puller won't be too bad as long as the soil isn't soaked.

I renovated my back lawn two weeks ago and now the roofers are here working on the back of the house. I can't irrigate there or the ladders/scaffolds are going to sink in the soil. I'll have to reseed that area in about a week and hope for the best. It isn't the end of the world by any means.

I was planning to start seeding my hellstrip after killing it off a few weeks ago...should I hold off on it until the sprinkler system is installed? if not, will they disturb my project?

Maybe I should just let it sit until next spring....

Based on how far north you are and the fact that you could use Tenacity, I would wait until mid-late April to seed. Andy was quite successful with it.

What about overseeding the front yard? When would it be too late to do that, since the installation is happening late Sept/early Oct?

I was planning to mow on the 2nd lowest setting and then overseed....then putting peat moss all over the entire front yard after the system was installed, so that i could have a proper irrigation system setup for it.

If you are trying to grow rye that's fine, but depending on how western/northern in ny you are, we are really running out of time for KBG.

As you'll hear from others overseeding KBG into rye doesn't work. That being said, its way too late to try that in Rochester, even if there was no Rye.

This sucks...wonder if I should bother getting Rye seed and seeing how it looks or just hold off until spring and just reno the heck out of the front yard into KBG?

If you are on this board you'll probably want a KBG lawn. Rye looks great in the Norhtheast in the spring and fall, up by you there is probably some winter kill. My neighbor's lawn, which is mostly rye, is looking quite nice after the weather cooled off and the 15 inches of rain this month.

Won't an irrigation system basically make it not matter though? since it will be receiving the right amount of water at all times?

We wish it did. Rye's a fine summer performer, but like KBG responds to the weather. Mine faded a bit this summer, not because of water issues (it poured a lot), but because temperatures were high.

Which seed from Lowes might work out best for overseeding fescue/rye then? I'm not really looking for top quality or anything - just want something to fill in the bare spots until I can possibly do a reno next spring with full KBG.

Just about anything, possibly some annual rye. Try to find as low a weed seed count as possible.

Went with Pennington's NE mix. Think this will be fine to try and seed around early October or should I just go ahead and do it soon? I can probably cut my grass low this weekend and spread seed/peat moss. Can't really keep up with watering though due to work, until my system is installed.

no need to spread seed if you cant keep up on watering it.....it will die.

Cant you water 1x before work, and as soon as you get home with hose/sprinklers? If yes, seed now and cover with peat or compost and it would survive....but miss a watering or two, and all bets are off.
depending on size of lawn, an inexpensive Orbit hose end water timer may do the trick for you {$30-50 at Lowes} thats what I am currently using, works great!
