Sprayers and what you should spray and what not to spray

Postby JC Paint Workz » August 29th, 2011, 8:44 am

Ok I have a 2gal "RoundUp" sprayer that I'm using for edging for the reno and spot spraying killer in the rock beds. I just got some Tenacity and I'm wondering do I need a new spreader for it or can you use the same spreader for Tenacity that is used for RoundUp.

I'm also thinking about future use of it for spot spraying Tenacity I would hate to have the Roundup hurt the grass some how later on.
Thanks in Advance,

James

fill it up 1/2 way with water, maybe a drop of dish liquid and shake. pump it up and spray until empty. it will rinse tank and hose/wand, even if not totally clean it'll dilute enough to calm fears.

It does not cost much to have several sprayers so I would say make the investment. I have 3 sprayers now plus a hose end. I am going to purchase a push sprayer next year that was recently reviewed by Morph.

I have the following sprayers (one for each purpose): #1 weed b gone, #2 roundup, #3 a hose end sprayer, #4 a miscellaneous one I don't mind rinsing out for multiple purposes. It saves time to have these. Just make sure you label them in some way so you - or someone else - knows what is in each one.

+1 BuckeyeChuck.

I have several:

#1: Round Up
#2: Tenacity
#3: Shared around to everything else

Because Tenacity is effective at such tiny rates, I'm not comfortable having that share a sprayer with anything.

Reason I asked is I was looking at a backpack but if I have to have several I'm sticking with the 2gal pumps. I don't mind buying couple extra $20 ones but I'm not buying 2 $79 backpacks lol. I guess I'll get another pump.

I'm thinking about spraying iron and BL conditioner in future. Would that fall into the #3 misc sprayer?

Iron and soil conditioner go in the hose end sprayer for me. One handheld pump sprayer for round-up. One for rose fungicides. One for everything else. The backpack sprayer is for herbicide (Tenacity, Certainty, etc.) blanket sprays.

I am with you on saving $. I love to get stuff but have to balance it out. I have no backpacks.

I get cheap plastic sprayers that are not even $20.....maybe not even $10 - don't remember. I would have no probs running iron or kelp, etc, through the same sprayer and will probably do that down the road after my reno unless a pro from here says different. I don't see any harmful synergistic effect taking place with those types of solutions being sprayed from the same container.

If I am wrong someone will correct me I am sure :)

You can get by with one sprayer. I have never been confident enough to feel that it is cleaned out enough from something like Round-up so I keep that separate. If you do that, it is only two sprayers for the lawn (Round-up and everything else). As for the backpack, it depends on how much yard you have. Mine is close to 10k sq feet between the front and the back. That is a lot to blanket spray in one gallon increments. That was also the reason for the hose end. Spraying soil conditioner was painful with a pump sprayer. For anything that isn't dose critical, it goes in the hose end sprayer. I can spray iron or soil conditioner to the whole thing in about an hour including prep and clean up time. Since I tend to spray one or the other every week, that is a lot of extra time for the family, etc. and well worth the $15 dollars for a decent hose end sprayer.

Iron, kelp, humic acid, soil conditioner--those things can share the same sprayer with no problems. Mine don't (I use the hose-end for everything there but the iron and the push sprayer for iron now).

I do try to keep herbicides in their own sprayers, but it's really not that important if you clean them very well between uses. It's just handier for me to pull the one I want and go rather than mix, transfer, and clean.

Oh--herbicides get cheap sprayers, the $8-$9 sort from the Home Depot. They work very well for spot-spraying.

When I rince out my sprayer, I rince it very well twice. Then I put 1/4 cup ammonia in the sprayer (2g), fill with water and spray a little out and let it set for 20 mins. Spray it all out through the wand and let it dry.

I can't remember where I read that procedure at, but IIRC the ammonia doesn't allow the herbicides to stick to the plastic thus allowing you to rince it well.
