To roll or not to roll (After seeding/topdressing)
I'm doing a Reno on my front yard. I have been reading that some roll and some dont. Should I roll my newly seeded/Topdressed lawn when the time comes or should I not.
If the answers are to roll where do I get a roller. and how do I do it (how large/much weight needed). Can you rent them at rental places? I dont have a tractor so it will all be hand powered.

Thanks in Advance,
James

If you can get a roller and have a smaller size lawn i for sure would roll. You can rent them at the big box stores. It really helps get good seed to soil contact.

do they make them you can just pull/push by hand and not with a machine? so i should roll right after seeding but before topdressing?
Thanks in Advance,
James

yes they make them with a removable handle for both pushing or pulling. This is what I do so take it how you want.
I water the lawn 2 Hr before i drop my seed
Put the seed out in many different directions (using low setting on spreader)
Roll seed in a few directions
put out peatmoss
roll lawn again a few times

I rented a roller from HD, 20 dollars for one day. It was a push/pull by hand type. I filled it less than half full of water, so it was easy to move. I don't think you want to fill it with too much water, for one it will be impossible to move alone, also you dont want to compact the soil. I rolled after dropping seed, covered with peat moss, then rolled again.

Re: To roll or not to roll (After seeding/topdressing)
Unless your soil is sloppy, soggy wet you cannot compact it with a few passes from a roller.
When Mother Nature seeds, she sends grazing animals into the pasture. Those animals eat most of what is there and knock the seeds off in the process. Seeds land on the ground and the animals walk on it to make good seed to soil contact. Sometimes they are stampeded away and sometimes not but the effect is the same. They push the seed down into the soil and they do not topdress. The dung they leave behind is quickly whisked away by dung beetles, pill bugs, and other fecal scavengers.

So for there is not a problem with seed adhering to the roller as you do this?

Seed doesn't seem to stick to the poly roller surprisingly. If you plan on doing more renovations or seed projects, those hand rollers are only $99.

I just purchased a poly roller on clearance at walmart. That is really odd that the seed does not stick but glad to know...thanks.
