Automatic/timer sprinklers

Postby i6pwr » July 1st, 2011, 11:28 am

I have a couple small areas that are in shade about 90% of the day, and i'm looking to try to establish some seed either KBG or just regular fescue.

The area is near top of driveway and I need to control the erosion, been neglected last few years but would like to start now and get the rest of my lawn going in the fall.

I know it's the heat of summer but again this area doesn't see any sunlight, not directly anyway. Sun makes it to the edge but the trees block it out. I would like to lay some seed and keep it wet during the day, so i'm after a decent programmable sprinkler.

Being on a well I feel it's safer since I have accidently left one on while I was home..not fun.

Would like to have at least 2 outputs independently timed if possible, but one that I can run for about 10-15 min every 1-2 hrs or whatever the soil needs. I'm away from the house most of the day so at least I can keep it wet during the high afternoon temps.

plenty to choose from at Home depot or Lowes, most in the $25-50 range. Orbit seems highly rated in the reviews I have seen.

Check Amazon too.

I've used this one for over a year.

My only complaint is the plastic connections.

I'll check out the Orbit, seems like it's what i'm after....ditto the plastic but I trust it will hold up.

Any tips for germinating creeping red? I will be laying down sifted topsoil today and hope to get some seed down as well. Should I wait until the germination to use any ferts?

If you know your soil to be phosphorus-short, an application of starter fertilizer with the seed would help it out. Young roots are short and have trouble getting all the P they want.

If you don't know, I wouldn't object to using starter at seeding time--but will recommend a soil test. One app may or may not be enough to keep the grass healthy, and you may have trouble with other resources.
